I saw Alexander yesterday with my family. It was super super good. So good that it was overwhelming, not only because it was an awesome movie, but because of the history! What was really interesting was the way the movie put off Macedonian life. In the battle scenes, when you saw people slaughter their enemies, it made you think that they were none else than barbarians. But then you saw them in complete states of luxury (like in Babylon) and it was odd (not in a bad way) because just a moment ago you saw these same people, these same civilized soldiers, in bloodbath and butchery. It was weird in a good way, or good in a weird way. Later, after the movie was over, dad said that Alexander wasn't getting very good remarks from critics (boo) but that he liked the movie anyway because it included a lot of history (yay), which I guess was unexpected (and he should know, hes the prof)
The best part of the entire movie was Alexander's slight gayness. In my dad's lectures, I learned that Alexander wasn't really struggling with his sexual identity, but more like he was unknowing and uncaring towards it. But in the movie, I wasn't expecting it to be so hot. Even though nothing ever happened between Hephaistion and Alexander... it was sure awesome seeing Jared Leto and Colin Farrel say that they loved each other. Sigh... I want to live in 345 B.C.
So the gayness isn't what made Alexander a great movie. It would've been just as good without it. And... it was the best movie that I've seen... not in a long time, but in a while.
In the end, all that matters is what you've done.
