last friday i saw the new neil jordan movie, breakfast on pluto, starring the unbelievably adorable cillian murphy. it's a coming of age story about a cross dressing irish boy who moves to london in search of his mother. although i'm sure murphy's performance will be annoying to many, i found hiim absolutely and endlessly chrarming. even shots of his back walking through a crowded club made me smile, with his daintily bopping shoulders and perfect curly hair flopping side to side. fucking adorable. kitten (his character) is innocent and sweet and it is never entirely clear whether kitten is particularly naive or just idealistic. one thing i really liked about the way the movie portrayed the character is that kitten, despite having intense relationships with various men, becoming (perhaps) a streetwalker, and ending up with a job as a peepshow girl, is never sexualized. there are intimate, sweet scenes with his/her boyfriends but you never even see a hint of a kiss. additionally, kitten is never clearly identified as transsexual, although by the end of the film she is living as a woman. but through most of the movie s/he moves between being both and simultaneously male and female. it's not a cop out on jordan's part as he obviously has no problem confronting transgender issues, but it's just that this character isn't so definable.

this movie isn't perfect, but it's cute, and it made me laugh. it's worth seeing if you liked either 'billy eliot' or 'velvet goldmine.'
