half nelson
i can always be more articulate about movies that i hate. when i see something amazing i tend to be overwhelmed by everything and can't bring myself to say anything other than "amazing" over and over again. so i will try my best, but the bottom line is that i absolutely loved this movie and may even see it again while it's in theatres. the two main actors are so intense and real: there is no melodrama although there is a saturation of understated tragedy throughout the film. ryan gosling as a teacher is inspiring and clever, but as a drug addict he is an intense fuck up and a total asshole. there is no attempt to create a likeable main character, but as the movie goes on his behavior becomes wearisome and you have no unreaistic expectations of a miraculous turnaround. the young woman who plays dre, a 13-year-old girl struggling to stay out of a life of crime and drugs while maintaining a friendship with her cracked out teacher, is absolutely charming. the movie is full of powerful moments, and the pivotal scene is incredibly powerful and played out only through facial expressions. the movie ends exactly as it should, which is refreshing. see it.
