Naptown Withdrawl

Jul 17, 2006 17:55

I've been down in the Smokies going on 8 weeks now.  I've reached the point where the initial excitement about being here has worn off, and things like working the visitors desk get tedious - if I have to tell one more person where the bathroom is, I'm gonna go postal on them.  That's not to say that I don't enjoy being here (I mean, I'm in a freakin national park! I have elk in my backyard on an almost nightly basis! I go hiking every weekend!)... but I've been thinking about home a lot lately.  I miss Annapolis in the summertime... downtown City Dock, going to see Bens Bones at 49 West with Laura, walking around the Academy and watching the plebes as they march by, late dinners on the back porch with the family, and the water... I really miss the water.  There's a place at the Academy where "the Severn meets the tide" of the Chesapeake.  The mizzenmast of the USS Maine stands there, along with the Triton Light, a navigational beacon that contains the waters of 22 seas.  I love going there to just sit and watch the boats go by and look out at the bay.  That's gonna be one of the first things I do when I get home.  Ok, enough with the melancholy wallowing... I got me some elk to find and some porch-sitting to do (with a beer in hand, of course).

I came across this list a while ago... I guess I'm a true Annapolitan - I know everything on it (and I added a few of my own as well):

Naptown means something to you
You don't go to eat at Buddy's
You get dressed up for the annual St. John's/Naval Academy Croquet Match
