Dear Rai 4,
please don't play with my feelings. First I find out you're showing Doctor Who every morning and you're about to reach the point where I stopped watching the episodes online. Then, when I try to watch them, the TV signal gets all messed up and won't work. Every digital channel works flawlessly, but the Rai channels keep having problems. It's not like we pay a tax for them, no, not at all.
Oh, well, I'll just watch it online like I've been doing so far. They're also broadcasting the latest series in the evening, but I get home around 7 PM, so I can only catch the last 15 minutes or so. And I'm way behind, it doesn't make sense to watch the last series when I still have a lot to catch up.
Anyway, the fandom meme.
angrylogic chose BBC!Lestrade and
flaschengeist chose Mrs Hudson.
BBC!LESTRADE
1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her. Likewise if you dislike the character.
I like Lestrade because... well, how can you not like him? He's the policeman everyone would want to meet if they ever needed help from the police. And one of the very few people Sherlock respects, even if he doesn't always show it.
2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
He's not essential, but he adds an extra something to the plot. And without him Sherlock wouldn't have access to police cases, so he is important after all.
3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?
He's not one of the major characters, so we don't know much about him. But I can feel his pain when he has to work with Sherlock: he must be very tempted to strangle him or lock him up somewhere and throw away the key.
4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
I love it. I fell headfirst into the Sherlock Holmes fandom with no notice: one day I was wondering what the fuss was all about, the next one I was addicted. And the BBC version is really well done. And so very, very slashable.
5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by their relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
I don't mind the occasional Mycroft/Lestrade fic, because they seem to be completely different and opposites attracts: the posh Government agent/spy/whatever and the down to earth, bamfy policeman. I also like the relationship between him and Sherlock, I see him almost as a father figure for a young, reckless, wannabe detective with too much brains and an addiction problem.
6) Is there anything about the character you would change?
No, not really.
7) If you were in the fandom with this character or knew this character in real life, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her? (Would you get along well? Fall in love with? Dislike? Friendly rivalry? etc etc)
He strikes me as one of those people you can always count on when you're in trouble. And he must be awfully patient to work with Sherlock on a semi-constant basis. So, I think I'd have no problems getting along with him.
8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or least favorites?
I don't know. I like him, but "all time favourite" is a bit much for a secondary character.
9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about (if you dislike) to someone whose new to the fandom?
Well, I like the character, but I don't think there's anything to hype up. And it's "who's", not "whose".
10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?
Yes, he's quite popular.
MRS HUDSON
1) What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her. Likewise if you dislike the character.
I like how she is portrayed both in the Granada and the BBC series. She must really care about Sherlock, otherwise she would've kicked him out after a week.
2) Is he/she important to the general plot?
She, like Lestrade, is one of those side-characters who aren't really important to the plot, but who either offer comic relief or allow the main characters to show parts of their personality they usually keep hidden.
3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?
I can't say I can related to her, she's much older than me and, in the canon/Granada verse, she lives in a totally different society.
4) How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
See above.
5) Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by their relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
I find the relationship between her and Sherlock very interesting. In the BBC series he's often quite rude to her (but he's like that with everybody), but he also cares about her. In the first episode he hugs and kisses her when he's excited about getting involved in the serial suicides case, something he wouldn't do to anybody else. She's like a beloved aunt for him, even if he'd never admit it. And in the Granada version he's even more rude, but she's not intimidated at all. Go Mrs Hudson!
6) Is there anything about the character you would change?
No.
7) If you were in the fandom with this character or knew this character in real life, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her? (Would you get along well? Fall in love with? Dislike? Friendly rivalry? etc etc)
She seems like a typical nosy neighbour, but not a bad person, so I'd probably be on a friendly basis with her if I knew her in real life.
8) Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or least favorites?
No.
9) Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about (if you dislike) to someone whose new to the fandom?
No, she's just one of the side-characters.
10) Is this character popular with the fanbase?
Yeah, I think she is. Probably because she's one of the few female figures and she obviously cares about Sherlock, but without being a Mary Sue.
