For my last day at work, it seemed that there were a fair amount of people trying their best to piss me off. At least they were ones I'd never seen before, not the usual suspects. All the regular people were great. It was a hugs and tears fest. Some people came in even though they didn't need anything, just to tell me goodbye. Everyone said the nicest things, reminded me of past conversations and kindnesses that meant so much to them. I have a purse full of phone numbers and email addresses. The heart surgeon told me "I never want to see you as a patient but you know where my office is, where and what time I have lunch, you WILL be expected to make an occassional appearance!" It was the same with everyone from the orthopedic surgeon's office too.
One of my regulars was in while I was talking to Mark on the phone. He was making fun of me while I was talking, making silly kissy faces. Even though he comes in all the time, he seemed to be the only person who didn't know it was my last day. He kept saying "NO! NO!" He said he was going to stalk me. I nearly fell on the floor laughing. He has NO car! He rides a bicycle.
My boss was around while all the hugging was going on but he's not a touchy-feely kind of guy. When Samir came in, he gave me a big hug. When it was finally time to leave (I had to work an hour over) my boss shocked me by giving me a great big bear hug. Mark wanted me to stop by the grocery store on my way home to get wood chips for the grill. I figured it would be easier to go to the store on Tchoupitoulas than the one nearer to home. I was in the vestibule at the store when he called again to say he found a whole bag in the garage. Yay! I headed home.
Mark kept teasing me about not having a job now. I put on my ugly green nightgown when I got home, mostly because the neighbor kept popping in. Mark joked that since I was now unemployed, I couldn't wear the ugly green thing anymore. He said I have to wear sexy stuff around the house now. The green thing is so not sexy! As much as he teased me, he made everything wonderful. We were both tired since we had almost no sleep the night before. We ate dinner and went to take a nap. We didn't get up until 4 am this morning!
I have to go back to my "old" job today to get my check. Mark and I talked about maybe offering to still work one day a week, the day I'm needed the most. I'll hash that out with the "old" boss today too.
