TEFL 1

Mar 25, 2013 20:50

So we had our first TEFL lesson today. Hildegarde's dad came and picked me up and took us to the EF centre in St. Julians soI didn't have to get a bus at 7:15, he came at like 8am so we got there for just over half past.....we were kinda early cos we didn't have to be in till 9 so we stood chatting and then at like 8:50 met with a friend of Hildergarde's called Rebekah and we went inside, where we met a few of the others....Roxy, Olga, Reine....Ali came for us...oh she's our teacher but we aren't allowed to call her 'miss' as we would do in school, we have to call her Ali...Anyways, Ali came for us, and 13 of us headed upstairs....turns out one fo the 13 was in the wrong class....he was there to learn English lol We got that sorted out though and Ali sent him to the proper place. Anyway, first activity was an ice breaker where we went up to another person and wrote our names on their backs and told them something about ourselves. It's all really friendly there which is great and while I can't remember everyone's names yet, I remember the majority. We are 11 girls and 2 boys (another girl joined halfway through)...I say boys but Reuben is in his 30s...Mind you, Reine I thought was my age but turns out she's older and has kids...some people have great genes lol

Anyway, at like 9:30 Ali tells us we're going to have a special lesson....Mandarin chinese....it was to show us how it feels to be thrown into the deep in a class where you're ebing bombarded with a new language and how taxing it....except I've already done a basic Chinese course XD I KNEW THERE WAS A REASON FOR EVERYTHING!! So my taking chinese in my first semester last year wasn't a waste LOL Mind, saying that, it was still exhausting.
That over we had a few exercise like how did the Chinese teacher communicate with us even when not speaking English, and how it would affect our teaching and stuff and at like 12:15 we were sent for an hour break...there's a canteen there and we went to it, and ooooooooooooooooooooooooh the smell of Spaghetti was AWESOME....except most of us are teens...and there's McDonald's 5 minutes down the road.....so guess where we ended up XD We SCOFFED the food, literally shovelled it into our mouths lol
Back for more activities....like doing a web diagram of what attributes a teacher should ahve, learning a few terms like drilling and monitoring and stuff, another 15 min break at like 3 and then she let us out early at like 4:30

It is pretty damn intense....but they, well Ali, really makes it fun
I thought they'd teach us how to teach, like I know it's early and stuff, but I thought they'd teach us like particles and stuff to teach the students but they don't according tyo Ali and that's something we gotta learn ourselves...like they'll teach us the curriculum but then we gotta do the reading up...like if we have to teach them nouns, then we gotta search in books and stuff about nouns....of course there's the curriculum and they'll (hopefully) teach us how to abide by it....I've downloaded two books ILLEGAL I KNOW but atm I really can't buy anything (can't be arsed but....yeah)

I'm just looking forward to what else they're gonna teach....still, I'm knackered and tired and mentally exhausted...we're being taught in 2 weeks with lessons everyday what is usually taught in 4 months with 3 sessions per week....Taxing, mentally tiring but really fun :)

Tomorrow we're starting at 8 so it'll be early to bed for me methinks....not to mention I'm already yawning past myself LOL

happy, teaching, english, tefl, learning, tired, course, chinese
