Diz, the partner of a friend of mine, has been arrested for bogus reasons and thrown in a Dubai jail. The link above will explain what happened.
While he's been there, and while his friends in the UK, US and beyond work to try to release him, they have uncovered a real problem in Dubai where people without such a support network have remained there for months and months without even being charged.

People often say if you go somewhere, ANYWHERE, do your research, know what you are getting into. Know the culture, know the risks, know the laws. Sometimes though, that is not enough to protect you. Diz did that, and knew what to expect, and it didn't help him.
And note that Dubai is NOT a safe tourist destination.
