I was going to say a similar comment, I agree with everything except: Don't tell your women friends how to be safe and avoid rape. is totally irresponsible and only a dumbass would suggest this.

That's like saying that you trust people will do the "right thing", well I have news for the original poster, not all people "do the right thing" and there will always remain assholes which have no conscience whatsoever. Changing people's attitude, yes, but it's like saying don't put your seat belt on because no one will drive like an asshole anymore.

This being said I understand the sentiment behind the comment but like they say in French: "Le chemin de l'enfer est pavé de bonnes intentions" (the road to hell is paved with good intentions". I guess it should be: "You shouldn't have to tell your women friends how to be safe and avoid rape." but that's in a perfect world, news flash, we don't live in a perfect world.

Bottom line, change attitudes but never leave your faith in other people's hands, when all is said and done there is only one person in life you can truly trust and it's yourself (and even then sometimes...)

Little addendum... saying to a female friend how to be safe and avoiding rape is NOT the same as condoning it and accepting that it is a part of life.
