Accommodation:
For the most part we have all stayed at Walhalla’s Star Hotel. The advantage of all staying in the one venue is that it provides a focal point for people to mill around, meet each other & get to know each other. This might not seem important to those who know other people attending but believe me, if you attend a week-end away on your own it is much easier to get to meet people when you know where they will be hanging out and that they will be all together.
Michael, the owner of the Star, is very Goth-friendly and has always looked after us. He has waived the hire charges on the conference room for us and has done his best to accommodate our evening meal requirements, to the detriment of his own restaurant. For my part it makes it much easier to help every-one have a good time if we all stay in the one venue. It also used to be the only reliable venue in town offering accommodation. This however has changed in recent years and there are now a number of options available. Please see under cut for accommodation options.
Please note you need to book your accomodation directly with the venue. The options are limited so I would suggest booking ASAP. I have not got pricing on a number of the options as yet but you can either call yourself or keep popping back to this post as I will update costs as I get them.
Walhalla’s Star Hotel
Preferred venue.
Opened in 1999 Walhalla’s Star Hotel is a faithful external recreation of the original hotel built on this site. Inside however is a thoroughly modern boutique accommodation space, a little bit of luxury in an historic setting.
All rooms have king size beds and be configured to either doubles or twins. Two of the rooms can be converted to triples, although you will need to get in quick for these. You should also be warned that if you select “Wealth of Nations” this room is commonly referred to as “the Party Room”, just so you know what to expect. ;-) All rooms have ensuite facilities, CD players and access either a balcony or cottage garden. The owner, Michael, is Goth Friendly & allows us to use the conference room free of charge for our evening’s entertainment. Double/twin rooms $199 first night & $169 subsequent nights, continental breakfast included. Or there is a dinner bed & breakfast package if we all decide dinner at the Star is a good idea. To book you will need to email or call the Star & let them know you are part of the Goth Weekend as he blocks all other bookings to ensure we have as many rooms as possible. You will therefore not be able to book using the automatic system on line as it won’t know you are one of our lot!

Windsor House
The only original brick building in town. This impressive two-story building has 5 rooms available but only one with ensuite facilities, the rest have shared bathroom facilities. The Aberfeldy Suite, the only ensuite room, has a queen-size bed with a separate single room attached so could be suitable for a couple & single folks wanting to share a room and split costs. Other rooms have queen size beds. Until last year this place was owned by a couple of less than friendly folks. Darrin & Cath took over Windsor House in 2006 and are delightfully friendly & helpful. Aberfeldy Room $200 per night, Double rooms $160 per night, Double rooms with sitting room $175 per night, cooked breakfast included.

Jacomb’s Cottage
A self contained cottage a little way out of the main strip, closer to the mine. This cottage is run by Darrin & Cath & I have no doubt will be up to the same standard as Windsor House. It sleeps two in the double bedroom & has a pullout sofa so can sleep a second couple. Weekends, $175 per couple first night and $155 for each additional night. Extra adults $30 per person, per night

Tisdall.
This is budget accommodation. Once owned by Monbulk Secondary College this is dorm style school camp accommodation now managed by one of the miners in town. It has recently had a bit of money spent on the place to bring it up to scratch. There is only one male & one female toilet & shower, accessed externally, to be shared amongst all of the dorm rooms. You need to bring your own bedding. The dorms sleep each have a double & two bunk beds. Price of those based on twin share is $85 per night. There is also a self contained cottage on the site which has bedding supplied. The cost of that based on twin share is $150 per night. I remain unconvinced.

Brewery Creek Cottage.
Previously called Fern Cottage this is a two bedroom cottage at the base of the cemetery. Built two or three years ago in a miners cottage style this place was a private home until a few months back so I would expect it to be up to normal living standards. I've not seen inside it so can't recommend from personal experience. Linen provided. Tariffs range from $175 to $230 AUD (Australian Dollars) per night per couple (from the ad at website below)

The Mill House
Owned by Norm & Rhonda from the General Store. I've not been in it so can't pass judgement although I have heard that it is a little run down. It does not show costs on this add that I found on line.

Camp Grounds.
If you are so inclined, Walhalla is renowned for its camping. There is an official campground at the far end of the town that has toilet facilities. However many people camp along the roadside in the deep grass verges. Be aware however that Walhalla, understandably, has a total fire ban, including all campfires, until at least the end of March. If you want to camp and intend to cook your own food, you will need to have a gas cooker or use the bbq’s in the picnic ground. The town had a narrow escape from the bush fires. The vegetation in town however remains tinder dry. Fire safety is very much at the forefront of every-one’s mind at this point in time.
For those wondering, despite the signage in town, both The Old Hospital and Wild Cherry Cottages have closed for business.
Don’t have any-one to share a room with? Let me know if you would like to have a room mate. I will happily put people in touch with each other if room share is something you’re interested in.
