Harvey Dent stumbled back against the brick wall of the alleyway, breathing heavily. He looked down at the gun he held in his shaking hand. He was a murderer. This time-it hadn’t been like before-with Wuertz and Maroni and the others. Those deaths he could justify. Sure, he’d been angry, but those men were deserving - they’d crossed lines and taken risks, paid for with their lives. Stansfield may have been a bit deranged but he hadn’t truly done anything to Harvey out of malice or greed. Harvey killed him out of pure, unadulterated rage.
He put the gun back in its holster and took a handkerchief from his pocket. After wiping his brow, Harvey gave a short, choked laugh. Some aspiring villain he was. He hated Jonathan Crane to hell and back but at least the psychotic doctor was able to do what he did without regret. Was he actually envying Crane’s ability to shut off emotion? Would he ever be okay with murder? Did he plan on killing more people? Who plans on doing something like that? Could he dress it up like Crane and the Joker did - call it a scientific experiment or a social one?

After walking out of the alleyway, muttering curses under his breath as he did so, Harvey realized he didn’t know where he was going. He’d gotten out of the Narrows as quickly as he could once he’d finished at Stansfield’s lab. Now back in Gotham proper, he wasn’t sure what to do next. He walked a few aimless blocks, arguing with himself, thoughts ping-ponging in his head. The lawyer-turned-fugitive continued like this, pacing Gotham’s shadowy streets until the darkness dissipated and the sun rose. When he finally arrived back home - as much as Nadine’s apartment could be called that - he was worn down, sweat-stained and a little dirty. He crept in, unsure if she’d be asleep or already getting up for work.
