Although....it may have been entirely my fault. *embarrassed*
It looks like I've had the wrong adaptor plugged into the cable modem for the last year, and it waited till now to complain about it. All the guy from Virgin did was change the plug, et viola! my interwebs is back

The right plug was actually in the desktop pc's speakers - good thing they haven't been used much, as the adaptor's one watt (or whatever) higher! That's why the modem grumbled, as it wasn't getting quite enough power.
