Unused TV21 Annual Star Trek Cover Art
A few weeks ago I received a real surprise in my email, a nice note from British comics artist, John Britton, who had worked on many of the titles I read as a young lad, including Joe 90 and TV 21. John had picked up a copy of my STAR TREK: A Comics History book, and was kind enough to let me know that he had enjoyed it.
Since then, we have exchanged a few emails about the old UK produced Star Trek stories, and those classic comic titles he worked on. Imagine my surprise when out of the blue he sent me a scan of an original piece of art he still owns - not one of his own, but one by someone I consider among the best, but under appreciated, British comics artists, Harry F. Linfield.
Linfield's painted covers and style was always immediately recognizable, especially on media tie-in work as he seemed to be able to capture both likenesses and the essence of the characters better than most. In particular I have very fond memories of his work on the Jon Pertwee era Dr. Who stories in TV Action.
John Britton tells me that this piece was originally intended to be used on the cover of one of the TV 21 Annuals, but was replaced by a Thunderbird's piece and so was never used. The painting was done in two layers, with the Kirk & Spock close up on the top layer, and a shot of The Enterprise, designed to be seen in the top left on the bottom layer.
