Likely not, too worried about someone else connecting remotely to my computer and the security problems it might entail, given that I know next to nothing about network security.

Not worried about Stanford, worried about other people finding out I have some random port open. Years back I had someone delete every single mp3 I had for no reason other than that I had sharing enabled over a network and no idea how to prevent people from doing so.

I still don't know how ... so I don't do anything that might cause security problems.
