What I'm reading

I have access to a lot of graphic novels at work now thanks to our ever expanding selection. I brought home a collected graphic novel version of Superman: Sacrifice

I sort of knew what the story was about, but I didn't know I'd enjoy it as much as I did.

Superman almost kills Batman. If not for Wonder Woman who manages to stop him just barely, Bruce would have died at his best friend's hands. The part of the story that I found interesting was how other were starting to view Clark as dangerous. At one point he uses his heat vision on an enemy and doesn't stop until the man is begging Clark to stop. Onlookers become terrified of this being who can literally burn you to a crisp if he wished. Clark reacts with profound sadness because of course he would never hurt anyone let alone anything.

In the story, Clark is being controlled by Max Lord and he makes Clark do all kinds of horrible things. The worst is sending Clark after Bruce. Max makes Clark believe something else is happening, and Clark fights with all his strength to kill his opponent, never knowing it's Bruce he's almost killing. Max wants to prove to the world that heroes are dangerous and that Superman is the most dangerous of them all.

I recommend the story. It's worth the read and Lois is wonderful in this. When the League sends someone to protect her from her own husband, she defends him vehemently. But even she has a spark of doubt at one point. After all, she's married to the strongest man on earth.
