So I didn't sew the coif all by hand - I did do some hand-embroidery on the coif:
I went through three versions for the flat cap, Changing my fashion fabric and lining fabric in each version. Sorry, no in-process pictures, I'll have to get better at taking those. Here is the final version:
It's a rusty cotton twill lined with canvas to keep it stiff. I think it came out rather nice, and I hope the recipient enjoys it.
I had an epiphany about making flat caps while doing this one, and how I can whip them together more quickly on the machine. Because I use an interlining, I had to change the layers slightly, so when I turned the seams the fashion fabric was sandwiching the lining - and I think that it differs from what many of the online guides say.It was far easier to puzzle out with the fabric in my hands than to glean from an online guide, for sure. The short version is to make the brim and top, turn them right-side out, and join them with bias tape.
As I said, I'm happy with it. I also want to create a few more for myself.
