I was going to say something about how a little optimism never hurt anyone, but then I realized not being optimistic might have prevented a lot of crap. So... low expectations didn't hurt anyone?
I'm a fan of pessimism. Total worst-case scenarios don't usually happen, sooo either every day is a pleasant surprise, or it isn't and you're already braced for it.
I did hear that constantly assuming the worst of everything has the side-effect of turning you into a cranky misanthrope, but I haven't seen the statistics to validate that.
