He's never been able to refuse Robert anything. (Up to the filler whether Ned's interest in Robert is one-sided. Also, I'm okay with this being set at any point in their lives.)

SOMEONE needs to do Robert/Ned fic at some point! I keep prompting for it but it never happens. Maybe I should write it. But I never get around to it. ;)

I KNOW. I'm sure someone must have written some Ned/Robert somewhere at some point but I've never come across it. It's definitely a disappointment. I almost want to fill my own prompt now. (;

None of the canon political machinations occur. Jon Arryn exposes the Lannister incest publicly, causing Cersei and her progeny to flee King's Landing and leaving Stannis as the clear heir on King Robert's death (which still happens and may well still be murder). Stannis is able to take the crown without any major difficulty. And, as it turns out, one of the many things he must endure as king is having every lord in the Seven Kingdoms send him some prospective squire. Stannis surprises everyone, including himself, when he chooses Ned Stark's bastard, who was only at court as an escort to his younger brother, Brandon.

Just so you know, I have written most of a fill for this but just noticed I switched tense halfway through. FAIL. Hopefully I'll fix it and post it up soon though because the man Beric was and could have been is pretty fascinating. He was only 21 in AGOT. Aaaah.
