So today I was hanging out with a few friends inbetween studying for finals and one of them called me immature. I don't know why it affected me because I know that it isn't true, but it enraged me to the point where I needed to do something to prove to myself that it isn't true. This came at a fortunate time as I had just read an article about Michigan legislators possibly cutting funding for schools all over Michigan. So I dropped everything I was doing, took a break from studying and, in a moment of passion, wrote a letter to state senator Nancy Cassis. I know this seems stupid, but I feels like a rite of passage for me.
"Dear senator Cassis,
I am Michael Berkowitz, an 18 year old freshman, soon to be sophomore, student at Michigan State University. I voted for you in the election last November and as a member of your district and your neighboring city of East Lansing, I feel that you should do your best to represent me. Because of this, I feel the need to discuss an issue that I am extremely passionate about.
I just received the news of the possible plan to cut Michigan education funds by $125 million in the current school year. I know that our economy is not at it's best, however cutting education is not a reasonable decision. As a growing society, we must realize that education is the key to our future. Without education, we are reduced to pre-societal creatures with a dark future ahead of us. Education is the one area of society that absolutely can not take any more blows. As it is, the Detroit Public School District is falling apart, the same department that employs my mother. By cutting education, we not only lose knowledge, enlightenment, and success but we also lose employment. This, as we know, will further depress Michigan's economy and enter us into a negative cyclical period of economic stress. Although I do not propose a solution to our problems, I do proclaim that this is not the correct solution.
Thank you for representing me to the fullest of your ability,
--

How is that for social and political maturity?
