Well Played, Glee...
So watching Glee last night… something happened and I *KNEW* the Interwebs would be ablaze with thoughts about what went down. Mr Schue KISSED Coach Beiste!!! I KNOW!!! INSANE…
Ok fine… maybe that wasn't the big story line of the night. But in case someone hasn't watched the episode this week I'll give you a little spoiler space.
Ok… Are you still reading? Then I'm presuming you've seen the episode. It was very timely. All the hot topic news stories over the last few weeks have been about gay (or perceived gay) teens being bullied to the point of suicide. We’ve seen most of the Glee Club kids get bullied in some way, shape, or form. Kurt seems to be on the receiving end the most, because of his very open sexuality.
I won't bore you with the entire recap. But to touch on the highlights...
So the football jock (do we know his name?) is VERY deep in the closet and quite angry about it. So at the very least he is bi-curious. I know that he's not a main player on the show. Heck… I don't even know his name other than Hamhock, which Kurt calls him. Even though Kurt has had some great story lines, this football player is the bigger story! Plus… we saw a primetime guy-on-guy kiss. How many of those can you say that you’ve seen in television history?
Then the Internet blew up. "OMG THE KISS!" "WEE GLEE!" "That would never happen in real life."
Well, of course it wouldn’t happen. It's TV! Who would watch TV if it was real? Who cares to see "How I Met Your Mother, Married Her, And Now Sit On The Couch In My Underwear Playing Xbox" …? TV is supposed to be entertaining. From Drama to Comedy, we want to be enthralled in some way! TV shows are meant to use condensed, extreme, and selective moments of real life to use as show ideas.
If this show was to be a little more true to real life Kurt would be 'sick' at home because he was afraid to go to school. Kurt would be teased mercilessly and possibly threatened. Such a kiss would never happen in real life. Not in any high school that I've ever known. Not that such a thing doesn't ever exist... because a closeted tough guy having inner turmoil over his sexuality certainly does. Show me that! Weave that into a storyline at some point
I do like that the writers have echoed (some may say copied) last years story line of Rachel falling for a rival glee club singer. It would be interesting if Kurt and The Warblers singer, Blaine have the same sort similar fling. If for no other reason than I'd like to see Kurt lighten up a little bit. I want him to have more dimension to his character. But that is a whole other rant.
