~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Remus is a wizard, and also a werewolf. With the help of his wand, he has the power to cast a multitude of spells, offensive and defensive, ordinary and fantastical. When it comes to magic his strengths lie very much in wandwork and defense: his best classes in school were Defense Against the Dark Arts and Charms, whereas he was absolutely terrible at Potions. Conversely, being a werewolf gives him next to no added strengths or abilities--except on the full moon. During the full moon he loses his mind to the wolf, and transforms into, essentially, a monster. At the point I'm pulling him from, the Wolfsbane Potion has not been discovered; thus, his only relief is through the help of his friends, who calm the wolf from its bloodlust and watch to make sure it doesn't run off and hurt anyone. Without his friends, the wolf needs to be contained in a place it cannot escape. During the rest of the month, Remus usually doesn't feel any different than any other boy, except, perhaps, a little bit physically stronger. Maybe. Near the full moon though he begins to get restless and tired, and after the full moon he's usually very drained and often injured.
How would they use their abilities?: Remus is by nature a helpful, responsible person. That's not to say he doesn't have a mischievous side--he simply hides it well. He enjoys teaching and learning, and is well suited to the career of a professor. All the same, has has been known to dabble in the pranks of his friends from time to time... or at least turn a blind eye.
Appearance: Thin, sickly, tired; his hair is mousy brown and his clothes are shabby, second hand, and well worn. He has a rather impressive set of scars on his face, crossing his nose and up his chin--they look rather like claw marks. He won't say how he got them, nor will he explain the multitude of other scars his has all over his body. He considers his nose on the large side, and his hair is generally shaggy and in need of a trim.
Background/Personality: Remus is a halfblood. That is to say--his father's parents were Muggles. His parents, like many wizarding couples, met at Hogwarts, and continued their relationship once out into the real world. His father worked for the Ministry in some mundane career path; his mother was a homemaker. Remus would, most likely, have been a fairly normal (magic) child. However, this changed when, as a young boy, he was bitten by Fenrir Greyback, a notoriously mean spirited werewolf who aligns himself with Voldemort. The circumstances of the bite have never been explained, nor does Remus wish to talk about it; it's possible he doesn't even remember it, considering how traumatic it probably was. Needless to say, his life was forever altered.
Werewolves, as a rule, are feared and hated by the magical community. They're bloodthirsty and violent, and lycanthropy is classified as a disease. This very much contributed to Remus's personality and development over the years. His parents were never meant to be wealthy, but their son's illness dug into their savings even more; the family was fairly poor by the time Remus attended school, and aside from the odd Muggle film he saw with his father, Remus amused himself with used books. He was quiet, and very reserved; the fact that he was also a werewolf only added to his introversion, as his parents confined their sickly child more often than not. Because of this, he developed an intense curiosity, which pushed him to learn more and more.
By the time he was ready for Hogwarts, Remus doubted he'd be allowed to go. He wasn't stupid: he knew what being a werewolf meant in the eyes of most people, and despite his rather complacent and gentle disposition he knew how unlikely it was he'd be allowed. Of course, Dumbledore intervened, and the Whomping Willow was planted on the Hogwarts grounds, guarding the entrance to the secret tunnel that led to the old house eventually dubbed The Shrieking Shack. This was where Remus spent the evenings once a month while the moon gripped his mind and transformed him into the monstrous beast he simply refers to as "the wolf."
Hogwarts was the place that defined Remus the most. Not only was he allowed to learn and interact with kids his age, but he had actual friends: James Potter and Sirius Black, two of the smartest students in his year, and Peter Pettigrew, who tagged along after them. The four boys became inseparable despite their different temperaments, and Remus was extraordinarily thankful to have met them and been allowed to be their friend. Remus wanted desperately to be liked--it's a downfall of his, really--and in the course of this he was dragged along on many of James's and Sirius's schemes, even the ones he disagreed with.
Part of what made them inseparable was that in his fifth year, James, Sirius and Peter accomplished something that was fairly unheard of: the three managed to become Animagi, and thus could join Remus on those nights under the full moon. Although Remus at first considered this absolutely ridiculous and too dangerous, he was proven wrong: the three friends spent the next years helping Remus with the wolf, and keeping him in check. It helped keep his injuries in check, and also kept him from destroying the Shack more than it already was. Remus will forever be grateful towards his friends for doing this, and he honestly doesn't think he'd have made it this far in life without them.
One of the things that left a bad taste in his mouth, though, was the mutual antagonism between James, Sirius, and Severus Snape. There was fault on both sides: while Lily didn't deserve to be called a mudblood and Remus didn't deserve to be outed as a werewolf, Snape probably didn't deserve the constant public humiliation dealt at the hands of the Marauders. He does wish he had done more to stop the fighting, especially once he was a Prefect. However, his need to be liked, to have friends, won out, and Remus often turned a blind eye to the constant fighting, even when Snape attempted to drag his condition into it.
Outside of his best friends, Remus was rather well liked around the school. He was considered quite responsible and well spoken, he studied hard, learned quickly (except Potions), and was even made a Prefect his 5th year, in some strange attempt to possibly curb the shenanigans of his friends. He was even friendly with Lily Evans in their early Hogwarts years, and he finds it rather amusing that James eventually won her over.
After graduating from Hogwarts, Remus really didn't know what he could possibly pursue as a career, given his status as a werewolf and, therefore, an undesirable. Luckily for him, beggers can't be choosers in wartime: being a rather gifted wizard and also friends with James and Sirius landed him in the Order of the Phoenix, a covert operation headed by Dumbledore to combat Voldemort and his blood purist Death Eaters. The threat posed by Voldemort had only grown during his time at Hogwarts, and he was rather proud to be included in this force against him. Terrified, yes--but proud all the same.

[ And then suddenly the video clicks on, and-- well, Remus is poking it with his wand, looking tired but determined! ]
Blasted thing-- technology is fascinating but what use is it if one can't turn it on, I say. Magic is useless, I suppose I'll just... try things....
[ Right so, he doesn't quite realize that it's on. He's still randomly pressing buttons.]
I knew I should have invested in some of the newer technology being released in the muggle world, not that I could really afford any of it, but I'm sure if I sold a few things---
[ He fiddles with the buttons a bit and the video cuts out, although audio continues. Sounds of tapping buttons can be heard every so often. ]
This is hopeless, I should just go ask someone-- why is there a light blinking, what does that me--
[ The sound cuts out abruptly and the recording stops. ]
3rd person sample:
Remus stared at the alien. The alien--although he supposed it would resent being called that--stared back.
"What do you mean, 'no chocolate'?" Remus asked, his voice taking on a slightly hysterical edge. It wasn't that, despite what his friends may say, he was addicted. Certainly not. It was just handy to have, keep the spirits up--made him feel better after every full moon. But he'd just finished off the last bit and now-- "How can you not have chocolate?"
He was staring at the shopkeeper as though he'd grown a second head. (Considering the alien was already completely bizarre looking, this wouldn't have been particularly odd.) The alien sniffed through it's tubes and looked as put out as its face would allow.
"We don't carry human things here," it said in a whiny voice, spindly fingers drumming impatiently on the counter top. "Now if you would be so kind as to move, I have other customers."
Still looking shocked and appalled, Remus walked numbly out of the store to where his friends were waiting. "They don't," he started, shaking his head, "carry human things." His voice sounded far away, and even when Lily gave him a comforting pat on the arm, he couldn't quite believe what he was saying. "No chocolate. No chocolate. Prepare the funeral, I'm not long for this world." He sighed dramatically. "I suppose I just have to hope for better luck next time."
After all, there were many planets across the galaxies. He supposed one of them was bound to have chocolate. Right?
Questions?: Erm, a bit. I've been brainstorming a little but I'd like to ask the mods opinions on how to do the whole werewolf thing? Since they're in space and there's no moon cycle... er. Yeah.
