More of the paratroopers form the other company start to work their way back into the CP with the sounds of conversation, laughter, and general bullshiting fill the air once most are in the mess line. SoS is on the menu again for the evening and most of the men groan about it. Traditional army food you know.
One of the men, a large radio on his back, plops his gear down close to where the new recruits are at. He gives them a glance slightly before pulling out a pack of Lucky Strikes and taps it on his palm. "You boys new?" he asks dryly.
"No shit?" the man says as he makes a funny face. "You hear that, Shifty? Man says the Germans gave them a welcome."
Shifty glances over from where he's droping his own gear a couple of steps away carefully watching the new guys before nodding his head. When he speaks his tone is slow and southern. "Rightly guess they're gonna do that t' everyone, Luz."
Pffting the radioman places a cigarette between his lips allowing it to dangle slightly. "Yeah well. Welcome to Holland- home of the pretty Dutch girls, SS troops, and ever present rain."
Bonzo smirks back at the comment, and then "SS" triggers something in his memory about who those guys were, exactly. "SS? No wonder they were such a pain to get rid of..." He sighs. "They killed almost my entire unit on our way here. I was just...lucky." ...that I didn't arrive any earlier than I did.
Luz smirks as he says nothing for a time simply watching Bonzo quietly. The kid may have proved himself with his old unit but if he was in Easy he was gonna have to do it on their level. Almost all of them had been together since Toccoa and that was a hard bond to crack a place into. But soon the cigarette is removed with said hand motioning to the guys sitting around. "You boys being transferred then?"
George offers the younger man a dirty hand. None of them are clean in fact and look a little worse for wear. Those around them that aren't eating are taking naps. "Sergeant George Luz- radioman for 2nd platoon. Know which group you're being stuck with?"
They wouldn't have been told anything. It was a key to wait to see where holes needed to be field.
One of the shorter men in the company walks over and flops down near George and Bonzo, looking at his meal in disgust and complaining loudly.
"I can't eat this stuff no more, I'm serious. You know what this is doin' to my teeth?" He showed his plate to Luz and then smiled wide to show his teeth. "Rotten. I'm sure of it. An just think what it's doing to my stomach."
He took notice of the new guy and looked him up and down briefly. "Hey, when's the last time you had real food, kid?"
Which is a very good thing right about now. Bonzo gladly accepts the handshake, and after a momentary get-your-name-straight pause (to avoid a very bad slip-up), responds "David Baker." Glance to the shoulder patch. "Corporal David Baker. Nice to meet you, sir."
He glances over at the other guy. "Depends on what you mean by 'real food'." He's grinning just a bit at that remark, knowing pretty much what's coming. Why do I think this is going to be the worst food I've had since Battle School?
George snarked a laugh as he dug his zippo lighter out of a pocket to light the cigarette finally. "Frank, for Christ's sake, you never don't have a toothbrush in your hand. Keep showin them off and you're gonna help the Krauts zero in on us."
However the taller man does reach a finger out to snatch a piece of toast, tearing off a corner and poping it into his mouth. "Same old shit every day."
"You don't say?" Battle School was known for at least some variety, but sometimes they ended up with the same thing repeatedly when a few of the crops didn't work out as planned. Remember when you transferred into your first army? Here you go again... Bonzo steps over to the chow line and gets some...surprise, surprise...SoS and coffee.
"What do I mean by real food?" Perco says, nudging Luz and nodding towards Bonzo, "He asked what I mean by real food."
Shaking his head he leans forward towards Bonzo and shows him his plate, "I mean not this. I mean like fruit, an meat and stuff that ain't out of a can or box an that don't taste like its spent a month in someones boot before you eat it."
He leans back again and takes a bite, talking to Luz again as he chews. "I tell you want Luz, whenever we manage to get back I'm gettin me some good grub. I'm gonna eat like a whole pie first thing. An I don't care what Doc Roe said about it makin me sick. It'll be worth it."
Bonzo returns from getting his food, and sits down to eat. "Too long." Munch. "Way too long." Breakfast is certainly feeling like it was...not this morning.
Luz laughs a good hearty laugh as Peconte speaks of foods that aren't army issue. "Sure, pal. Hop a ride back to Eindhoven and we'll have some pickled eggs, apples, beef...you name it." Smirking the radioman slides down to the ground, blowing a cloud of smoke out infront of him.
When Baker comes back he scoots over giving the man some room. "So, Frank. These guys missed all the action today at the dike. New recruits for us."
"Yeah, I just might." He says to George on the comment of heading back to Eindhoven.
He looks at Baker and then back at the new recruit. "Missed all the action, huh? Well don't worry pal, you'll get plenty of action you end up with Easy. Didn't I say Luz, didn't I saw we're always at the front?"
He shakes his head and sets down his plate so he can hold his hands up towards Bonzo, nine fingers up in demonstration. "Nine companies and we're one of em but guess who always gets the front? Who always gots to be leading the charge? Easy. An yeah, it's cus we're the best but still that don't mean it has to be us all the fricken time. Am I right?"
He turns to Luz and Baker for support on the matter.
Alright. It's obvious that we're in 1944 if I remember my history right. Now, how did I get back here and how do I get back to the Bar?
