Sometime in the last quarter of the twentieth century, the spacecraft Voyager was launched into the black beyond. On the spacecraft were detailed accounts of the human race. Who we are, what we like, what we don’t - an example of everything, good and bad- inscribed on gold disks. The task of ‘what to write’ on the disks was given to Dr. Carl Sagan, an extraordinary scientist and life-long extraterrestrial enthusiast.
In 1990,as the voyager passed Pluto and began its leap of faith into the abysmal cosmos, Dr. Sagan and his wife asked that the craft be turned back one last time to see the Earth in all its infinitesimal glory. The image was taken, as was the breath of all present.
Dr. Sagan had this to say on the matter.
