Not to put too fine a point on it, but Eden's pissed off. Babe won't even look at her, none of her clothes fit, she needs to shave and Nelson's being just as clingy as usual. She sits on the compound steps, feet stretched out on the sandy soil and Nelson curled up on one thigh. She's smoking her third cigarette in a row ( Read more... )

It'd been a weird morning. The island was probably up to its old tricks, but so far Alice hadn't bothered to find out which ones. She was headed to the Compound for breakfast, and on the steps she found...huh. A chain-smoker to rival Eden. Sometimes, Alice wondered where the woman got all her cigarettes, but she decided in the end that she really didn't want to know. They were probably made out of banana leaves or something.

While she didn't recognize the man, Alice recognized the kitten with him, and she stopped for a moment to stare.

"Does Eden know you've got her cat?" she asked bluntly. Maybe she'd given it away. Maybe Babe had. It couldn't hurt to ask.

But curiosity killed the cat, as they always said...

There's a relief there that's unquantifiable, seeing Alice standing in front of her. At least Alice probably won't look sick at the thought of basic bodily contact.

"Yes, she bloody does," says Eden, grinning, scratching Nelson between the ears. "Nobody else'd take the little bastard."

"I don't know, her boy-toy seemed pretty keen on him," Alice said. Maybe it was just too early in the morning, maybe she was tired out from recent ITF training, or maybe she was just having a plain old stupid day, but the dots hadn't joined themselves up yet.

"You know Eden, then? I don't think I've met you before." She eyed the man suspiciously.

Eden can feel the muscles in her jaw tighten at the mention of Babe and she shakes her head, looking down at the cat in her lap.

"Nelson likes Babe, but I'm not sure about the other way around. And, yes, Alice, you have. I know all about you and your burgeoning golf fetish."

She looks up, dark hair hanging in her eyes.

"And don't call Babe that."

It clicked like a pistol pressed to her forehead then.

Alice stared, her eyes widening.

"......Eden?!"

"What do you think, Alice?" says Eden, her head tilted on one side, as she slips her cigarette back between her lips.

"Better or worse?"

"What kind of fucking question is that?" Alice asked, still in shock, apparently.

"You're a goddamn man!"

"You know what, Alice? I've bloody noticed," snaps Eden. "And Babe's noticed and Nelson's about the only bloody one who hasn't. I can see the fucking difference."

Alice took a moment to collect her thoughts, but most of them consisted of variants of holy shit so there wasn't much point.

"Well," she said. "It could be worse." She wasn't sure how, exactly, but she'd think of something. Eventually.

"How?" says Eden, stubbing her cigarette out beneath the toe of her boot and standing up, hoisting Nelson in one hand. If she's going to survive ITF training, she needs a cup of coffee.

"Please. Bloody enlighten me."

Alice looked up at him. Her.

"I could've been switched too," she said. "Then I'd still be taller than you. You should enjoy looking down at me while you can," she smirked.

"Oh, fuck you too," says Eden, turning her back on Alice and striding into the compound.

"I'm having a bad enough morning without you being an arsehole as usual."

"I think you'd be more unsettled if I was nice," Alice said, half to herself. She shook her head and followed Eden into the compound.

"What happened?" she asked, having to jog to catch up and fall into step with her. She wasn't going to think of her as a him. It probably wasn't politically correct. Like you could apply anything politically correct to this sort of situation. "Did Babe freak out?"

Alice has got a point there.

"Well, I woke up like this and Babe decided to get all 1945 on me." Eden's mouth pinched into a tight line.

"I don't know. Does not being able to look at me count as freaking out, do you imagine?"

"Can you blame him? I mean, really?" Alice asked. "As far as I remember, attitudes towards...men with men...back then were a lot different to how they are now." And even more different to how they were on the island. This was probably the staunch conservative homophobic's version of Hell.

"Yeah, but he's supposed to be in love with me, Alice. It's not the same."

Eden rubs her hand over her jaw again, and doesn't want to talk about how much it hurt, waiting for him to say it. Waiting for him to say it back, when, usually, it was him waiting on her.
