It was quiet, just for a moment, a split second, and right in the heart of London the world seemed to stop. Traffic ground to a halt, and the birds put their petty differences aside and stopped their squabbling.
Beside you a girl with chestnut curls and big doe eyes held her breath, by mine a sandy haired boy smartly dressed in Sunday best pressed a cold ring of metal to the palm of my hand.
You stood staring at me in an over starched shirt and a tie I knew would feel too tight to you, your hair was combed and your face clean shaven, and I could see the barest hint of a smile at the corner of your mouth. Your eyes met mine and shone with a thousand unspoken promises, of joys and lows and heartaches to come, joint dreams and triumphs, shared hurts and comforts. I saw our past and present and future in those eyes. I see them still.
You swallowed, wet your bottom lip- my breath hitched and my head spun, and the cold ring of metal wasn’t cold any more- but boiling hot to match my skin. I saw the white gleam of your teeth and your smile was met with my own, you winked at me and I giggled like a schoolboy- flustered and shy in a way only you can make me- and then finally, after what seemed like an age, finally- you spoke;
“I do.” You said.
And you did.
