Introduce yourself In great detail.

My name is Peter Gabriel Broughton Sweet. Or maybe it’s Peter Gabriel Evans. Most People call me Pete Sweet. Prolly cause it rhymes.

I got told when I was seven that I was named after the lead singer of Genesis, because Dad couldn’t be bothered thinking up a name and the next door neighbor was a big fan. I recently found out that’s not true, that I’m named after my dad’s favourite story from when he was little, Peter rabbit, and his mam, who was a Gabrielle. The story about the neighbor was a joke. My dad doesn’t understand seven year olds can’t tell when an adult is joking. This is usually why while he looks back at raising me with a certain fondness I tend to think of it as living under the rule of the giant at the top of the bean stalk.

I have a fear of the dark, and a fear of drowning, and a fear of being on my own. I have one irrational fear of zombies, and I don’t like owls much. I have an over active imagination and when I’m lonely I invent people to talk to. My parents were told I’d probably grow out of it.

I like to prove people wrong.

I’m not very clever but I have good grades, I can talk myself out of most bad situations, I can fight my way out of the rest. I prefer tomato sauce over brown, which is a constant and devastating let down to my husband. He’s called Aidan and I’ve known him since the dawn of time. He likes the way I laugh, and my freckles, and that I always steal his jumpers. He doesn’t like the way I make his tea, and always change shampoo brands without telling him. I like the way his voice sounds with my ear pressed to his chest, he sounds like thunder and feels like rain.

I’m pretty short and my parents are both tall. I’m probably short because I didn’t eat much when I was younger and I didn’t get to play outside much. It doesn’t bother me half as much as people think it does. Most things don’t. but I let them think they’re winding me up because it makes people laugh, and I like to make people laugh. I think if I could do anything in the world all the time it would be that. I have sandy blonde hair, and blue eyes. I think it’s really boring. Aidan doesn’t. Blue is our favourite colour- though I like sky blues and he likes darker tones.

I don’t like jelly and ice cream. I like both separate. Having them together can make me quite upset.

My Granddad was in the IRA. We don’t talk about him though. He’s why my dad is in the police. He’s why we’re not Catholic. I think my dad tried so hard not to be like his dad that he ended up fucking me up in a whole different way with the same results. I have no respect for the law.

My mum is Scottish but she doesn’t sound it. Because she didn’t want to be Scottish. All the girls at her school used to make fun of her accent so she changed it. My real accent is her fake one, and my fake one would make her blood curdle. My dad has an Irish accent and he never tries to hide that. Sometimes he talks about taking me to Ireland, so I can see my roots, but not until his dad is dead. Mother never talks about taking me to Scotland. But I have a mad Aunt who lives there. I’m not sure if she’s really mad but she does send me birthday money when it’s not my birthday and call me Joseph.

Sometimes I help with a youth group. I teach them different plays and they do a show for their parents. A lot of the parents don’t come. I try to fill the seats regardless. They don’t usually mind. Once a boy called Robert told me that they don’t go on stage for their parents, they go on for me. It made me sad and happy at the same time. I’m not very responsible with them though, because if they invite me out I’ll go meet with them and I’d never buy them booze but if they have it I don’t stop them… sometimes I join in. I’m almost 27 and that might have to stop soon.

I have three puppies that a lot of people tell me are my furry children. They’re probably right. I would like to have a baby but I think it would be for selfish reasons- because I’d like one to need and to need me, something to love me and be real and mine. That’s alright to do with dogs I think because they will always need you, and love you, as long as you love them. But Babies grow up into people, and I’m not so sure at how good I am at looking after people.

I’m also one of the most fortunate guys in the world when it comes down to the friends I have now. I especially know it because I spent so long without any. Sometimes I have to pinch myself to believe that they are real, and not just in my mind. But they’re unbelievably real. I was lucky enough to marry one of my best friends, and everyone I care about is only a walking distance away. Because I live in London, the greatest, most terrible city in the world, and I love it to bits.

And that’s me, Pete Sweet, in great detail.
