I generally prefer the books to the show, especially when it comes to how I picture the characters and differences in their characterizations. For example, Stannis charging into battle, yelling and waving a sword? No way. Samwell as a randy White Knight of the Friendzone? Come on, he wasn't THAT bad in the books. (That said, I like both of those actors; I just prefer their characters like they are in the novels.)

I'm even willing to try one of these Modern!AUs I hear so much about. I admit I'm not the best at fluff.

Hmm, I don't think I've seen Stannis/Ned anywhere. It would certainly give a new meaning to all the times Stannis says things like: "Ned Stark was an honorable man, BUT HE WAS NO FRIEND OF MINE!" Seriously, though, there needs to be more fic where the two interact because their characters are so very similar with a couple exceptions, such as having loving relationships with their siblings.
I agree! I would even just like to see a scene with them interacting at all, in a more canon-compliant fashion. They really are similar in many ways, and I think it's interesting only one of them so wants to insist that they were never friends. Stannis definitely has some ~feelings of resentment there. ;)

Certainly anything listed in my requested pairings is okay:
Stannis/Davos, Selyse, Ned Stark; Samwell Tarly/Gilly, Jon Snow, Leo Tyrell; Renly/Loras; Robert/war (lulz)
But even that's not an exhaustive list. I'd be okay with almost any pairing that involves one of my favorite characters, or at the very least, I would consider it and give it a shot. I'm open to possibilities!
However, I will say that I can't write good fluff when it comes to certain characters (Stannis), but that's more of a genre issue.
