This is freaking important

There is a bill in the House of Representatives right now that will reinstate the federal parole system. For those of you who don’t know, in the federal system there is no parole at all right now. Inmates have to serve at least 85% of their sentence, and if they have good behavior, they can get out before serving the remaining 15%. The parole system that used to exist, the one that we are trying to bring back, states that an inmate would only have to serve one-third of his sentence before being eligible for parole. He would then go before a parole board who would decide whether or not to let him out, which they most likely would for a non-violent good behavior inmate.
The bill is called HR 3072 and it would be really great if all of you could just take a few minutes out of your day and write your local representative asking him or her to support HR 3072. The more letters, phone calls, faxes, and emails they receive, the more likely they will be willing to support the bill. All you have to do to contact your representative is go to this website: www.house.gov On the left there is a link that says “Write Your Representative”. Just click on it and fill in your location. The website will tell you who your representative is and provide a link for you to write them a letter online. It only takes a few minutes and I am really appreciative of all of you who take the time to do this.
If you don’t know why you should care whether or not inmates get out on parole, here is something to think about: The number of federal inmates right now is 187,394. (http://www.bop.gov/locations/weekly_report.jsp) This number is updated every Thursday. It costs around $25,000-$30,000 per year to maintain one inmate in prison. You can do the math. It would save the taxpayers/government a whole lot of money if the parole system was in effect. This extra money could be applied towards paying for damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. Please think about it. If you don’t want to support the bill for inmates and their families, then do it to apply those tax dollars to help all the people affected by the hurricane.
If you have any questions, feel free to leave a message. Thank you!
