Summary: Jaebum didn’t realise how much effect Jackson had until he met Mark
Breaking up was never easy. Jaebum had been through them before but this was different, Jackson was different. Jackson fucked him up. Loving Jackson was intense, draining, amazing. So it wasn’t a surprise that breaking up was also intense, draining, painful. Jaebum had been Jackson’s first boyfriend in a sea of girlfriends, sexuality issues and an innate desire for everyone to love him. Jaebum probably shouldn’t have given him a hard time about it. Although he wasn’t going to wait forever, and he’d had enough of being ‘best friend’, ‘buddy’ or ‘roommate’. What was the point of dating if everyone that mattered in Jackson’s life just saw him as a friend. He hated that when Jackson’s family had visited just after they’d moved in together he was ‘roommate’ and ‘close friend’ for those days. When they left Jackson had tried to make it up to him, promising that he was going to tell them, he just needed time.
It has been Jaebum that had moved out. But it was Jaebum who was suffering most, the fight had been bad, but then all their fights were bad. They were both hot headed and with short fuses, so they’d fight fiercely and then have intense make up sex, usually with one against a wall whispering words of apology as they came down. This time was different, Jaebum had brought up the one thing they both skirted around all the time, Jaebum sighed, remembering his words. “At least I admit I’m gay. I don’t need daddy to approve, I just have to be true to myself.” perhaps it was a bit harsh for him to say it, but he’d just reached his wits end. Jackson had slept with a woman to prove his fencing team wrong when they said he was gay. He had thought Jaebum wouldn’t find out, but it had been the secretary at his office who’d proudly been showing off the guy she’d hooked up with’s photo.
Jaebum had confronted Jackson and it had just got worse from there. They had never hit each other physically (although hitting with blunt words was common), but Jaebum swore he almost did that day. He actually punched the wall in their bedroom and broken some of his knuckles. He was aware he needed to control his temper, but he’d lost it at that instant.
He missed Jackson - and that fucked with his head. He wanted the other to call, to apologize, to make empty promises about coming out, to lie about accepting himself. Just one call - even full of lies would send Jaebum running back.
Of course that wasn’t going to happen, there were whispers Jackson was hooking up with someone Jaebum vaguely knew. Jaebum was ok, he was going to be fine. He’d been flirting with a very cute barista and he was fine. The damage of the break up was fading, he kept telling himself over and over.
Mark was cute, completely Jaebum’s type, Jackson had been the opposite. But Mark was stunning, dyed red hair, cute smile, shy - but not in a way that prevented him flirting. Jaebum smiled as he ordered his coffee, watching as Mark made it quickly. He took his coffee and Mark kept his eyes on him. “Jaebum,” Mark said quietly, “Instead of waiting until the end of my shift for us to hang out like normal, we could…” He paused a little. “I can cook and we can hang out at my place.” Jaebum smiled and agreed to the date, taking the other's address.
Mark’s place was nice, at parts minimal but it felt like a home. Mark wasn’t the greatest cook and Jaebum had had to rescue him from nearly starting a fire. Mark was even cuter away from everyone, and Jaebum liked him more and more. It was, however, Mark who started their kiss. They’d had small kisses before, but this was lustful - Jaebum hadn’t pegged Mark as someone who would want sex on their first date but if they both wanted to there was no harm in doing it. They were two adults, and Mark was comfortably sitting on Jaebum’s lap. The sex was different from when Jaebum was with Jackson; Mark wanted something slower. It was a different kind of intense.
Jaebum had been surprised that Mark had dropped into his mother tongue, because unlike Jackson he was rather proficient at Korean. Mark kissed Jaebum gently after, while they were coming down. “Sorry” Mark breathed out, keeping his body close to Jaebum’s, one leg over Jaebum’s hip to make sure they stayed close. “I don’t normally sleep with someone like this, I just, I really like you, Jaebum.” Mark shifted a little to go to sleep. He smiled at Jaebum. “I know you have work early tomorrow, you have a 9 to 5 job. I’m on shift at 1pm so wake me up when you get up and I’ll get you stuff to shower.” Jaebum tried his best not to laugh as sleep was clearly taking over Mark as his sentences began taking an odd structure.
Jaebum sighed when he woke up, he looked at Mark who was soundly asleep. If it wasn’t for the fact that he had no idea where anything was, he would have left him like that. He woke Mark up and got a good morning kiss and was handed all the shower stuff he needed. The rest of the work day went like it normally did. He went for his usual coffee, and everything was normal. He smiled at Mark as his coffee was being made. “Let me take you out to eat on Saturday, if you’re off Sunday?” he asked, his plan being to take Mark somewhere really nice.
When Jaebum picked Mark up, he was amazed by how good the other looked. He was happy to see the other smiling. They were led to their table and sat down, looking over the menus to set about ordering. However, when Jaebum reached over to take Mark’s hand, the other recoiled. Jaebum sighed and then looked down, this wasn’t what he expected, this was exactly like Jackson. He looked at Mark. “Are you out?” he asked with a nonchalant shrug - although the question was anything but.
“Yeah, I’m out.” He said taking a drink, “I just don’t want to scream, how much I like men, also we got enough weird looks just for walking in together without us holding hands and it’s honestly just easier this way.” He eyed Jaebum. “I mean, who can eat a meal while holding hands?”
Jaebum ended up back at Mark’s again, slowly fucking the boy into the sofa, Mark grasping at Jaebum’s arm as the other moved into him. Mark laughed a little as they were coming down, Jaebum resting on top of Mark, whining a little that he had to get up in a second to put the condom in the bin, “Wanna tell me what the restaurant was all about?” Mark raised an eyebrow, Jaebum just looked at him.
“My ex was a bit weird about us being open.” He shrugged. He was over it, he told himself - and he didn’t really want to go into it with Mark.
“That explains a lot.” Mark said looking at Jaebum and sighing, “I get it, I mean my ex didn’t want to tell her parents she wasn’t dating a Korean.” Jaebum pushed himself off Mark, she, he wasn’t sure he could do it, it felt like Jackson all over again.
“You dated a girl?” Jaebum eyed Mark. “You said you were out.”
“I experimented a little, but I’ve been out as gay since I was like 15” Mark said moving to sit up and watch the other, “I mean I do like men, but it was just one girl who I just wanted to look after and date and everything, but I’m gay, Jaebum, and I ended it after 5 months because it just wasn’t right.”
Jaebum sighed a little, “You’re like my ex, you can’t cope and you think I’m going to stick around while you just use me.”
“Whoa, Jaebum, hold up on that.” Mark said watching the other, “Is the problem my sexuality and the fact I had a crush on a girl, or is the problem your ex, who sounds like an asshole, if he didn’t want to show you off.”
“Fuck off Mark, Jackson..” He hesitated. “You’re the same as him, you just want to fuck men but be with women for show.” Jaebum started pulling his clothes on. Mark just sat there.
“I get it your ex was gay and in denial, but I know what I am Jaebum. I’m 100% secure in dating you, I’m not some confused guy who’s afraid of admitting I like dick.”
Jaebum looked at him, “You’re like Jackson, you’re just going to fuck me over.”
“Jaebum” Mark sighed, “Know what, you should just go. I have an early shift tomorrow and I’m not going to argue about this. If you can’t handle being with someone who’s dated one girl in his entire life for 5 months, you should go. Because you might talk about how I’m insecure, but it’s not me out of the two of us who’s trying to start a fight.” Mark ran his hand through his hair. “Jaebum, look, I get you’re scared that I’m like your ex and I’m going to hurt you by getting with girls behind your back to make some exceptionally pathetic point, but I’m not. I’m genuinely out, and I genuinely have attraction to men and i’m attracted to you, and if you want me, it will only be you. I know you’re not an asshole and I must really like you for me to be doing this, your ex has hurt you and I understand how that feels but I’m not him Jaebum, I’m my own man.”
Jaebum walked out.
츄 - 츄 - 츄 - 츄 - 츄
“You know Jae, that sounds an awful lot like someone was projecting his Jackson related issues onto the sexy barista,” Jinyoung said, as they sat in the cafe Mark worked. Jaebum was waiting for Mark to come on shift. He wanted to talk to him, to clear the air afterwards - realising he had been a complete idiot.
“Yes Jinyoung, we’ve had this conversation like nine times.” Jaebum huffed, watching as Jinyoung took a bite of his muffin.
Jinyoung sighed, and then looked out the window, “I mean Jackson was gayer than a rainbow unicorn, but Mark, from what I’ve seen of him he really could go both ways.”
“Shut up Jinyoung, I get it. I’m an asshole.” Jaebum sighed, “And the girl was a one off thing, he was seeing if he liked it and it wasn’t his style so he broke it off.”
“And yet, you had yourself a freak out about him fucking girls behind your back, nice Jaebum, classy.”
“It’s been a month, do you think he will have forgotten?” Jaebum bit his lip.
“Will Mark have forgotten you fucking him and then having a meltdown because he kissed a girl? No Jaebum, no one would forget that. I’m assuming you didn’t have your dick hanging out when you said all this, although if you didn’t he might have forgotten if he was that into you.”
Jaebum didn’t reply, Mark had walked in he had dyed his hair again, but this time it was back to black. Jaebum stood up and walked over Mark eyed him. “Can we talk?” Jaebum asked quietly. Mark sighed.
“I’m working Jaebum.” He moved to the till. “Your usual coffee?”
“Yeah, no milk though, I pulled an allnighter at work.” Mark just replied asking for the money. “When do you get off?”
Mark sighed, handing Jaebum the change. “I finish at 6, but I’m not going to stay around for long.”
By the time Mark got off Jinyoung had left, Mark walked over and sat down across from Jaebum. “Mark” Jaebum said quietly, “I wanted to apologize for what happened, when I lost it at yours. It's not an excuse but my ex really messed up my head and I was wrong to assume you were him.”
“Ok.” Mark shrugged.
“I was wondering if you’d let me make it up to you.”
“No.” Mark shook his head. “No. I’m not just some easy guy, who thinks you’re really hot so will let you talk to me like crap but still date you. No, Jaebum. I can’t.”
Jaebum went round to Jinyoung’s and they sat on his couch eating bad Chinese food and watching classic movies. Jaebum’s phone rang and he looked at it, a message from Mark.
He sighed opening it, only to smile.
Look, I was thinking, I really do like you. But you really were an asshole. I can give you a second chance but we’re going slow, like you’re only getting a kiss when we first start dating. I’m free tomorrow if you are?
