She finds more than she expected when her path crosses that of the Invisible Man.

Round Up Post

I don't even know what to say. It's hard to tell her to keep her chin up and that things will get better when my life's going so well right now. I mean, I have an amazing husband and my job is awesome. Mary Anne loves her job, has Chad, and the girls, and you get to travel all over with the Doctor and Frey. With all that, I can see why Stacey hasn't been answering our emails.

~ snippet of an email from Dawn Schafer-Callis to Kristy Thomas

Two months. It had been two months since Claude had disappeared in front of Stacey's eyes and left her to keep her safe. Well, it was two months and four days. Stacey was sure she could calculate the hour too, but that was probably the first step towards insanity, so she refrained. If she did that, next she'd be talking to the air like he was there with her, only invisible, and then she'd pull out the gown she wore at their wedding ceremony and wear it forever, like she was Miss Havisham from Great Expectations.

Claudia and Steve came out of her room whispering to each other. As they passed Stacey on the couch, Claudia spoke up suddenly. "Hey, Stace, Steve and I are going to see a movie. Wanna come with?"

On the couch, Stacey was forlornly rereading Lord of the Rings, the much loved copy opened to the chapter where Faramir and Eowyn fall in love. Whether it was helping her, or making her feel worse, she hadn't decided yet. "No thanks."

Claudia looked at Steve, asking him with her eyes to try and convince her.

"It sounds like a good movie from what I heard." Steve piped up. "With that guy you two like. Ecclescakes or something."

Stacey raised her eyebrows but didn't look up, only half listening to him. "Never heard of him."

Claudia tried again. "It's one of those, what do they call them? Dramedies. I think you'd really like it."

But Stacey just slouched further down on the couch with her book. "Maybe next time, guys. I don't feel like it today."

"Are you sure?" Steve asked. "We'll pay for you so it's a free movie."

Stacey turned a page. "I just don't feel up to it, guys."

"Well," Claudia began carefully, "Umm, wouldn't it be nice to get out and get some fresh air?"

"I get air." Stacey argued.

"When?" Claudia asked.

"When I go to work and when I leave work."

Steve gave Claudia a look of disbelief and Claudia nodded back, saying, "That's... not really what I had in mind."

With a sigh, Stacey looked up. "I was going to go for a walk later, okay?"

Steve could tell from her tone that she was getting annoyed with them, so he cheerfully said, "Okay! That sounds great. We should get going or we'll miss the trailers." He tugged on Claudia's hand to go, but she stalled for a moment, looking concerned, then she said, "Okay, have fun."

Stacey had looked back at her book and muttered, "You two have fun. A walk isn't fun, it's just exercise."

Now Steve looked concerned as well, but he didn't know what else to do, so he said, "See you later."

"Mmm, yeah. Later."

They shut the door behind them and Stacey let out a deep sigh, rubbing her forehead.

People on the sidewalk passed by, swinging shopping bags, having conversations, and just going about their lives. Little did they know that they were being watched. They had no idea that an invisible man watched them pass by as he leaned back against the brick apartment building. They didn't know that for the past two months and four days he'd been there, stationed either against that wall beside the building's front steps, or in the alley beside it, or at the building across the street from it.

For two months Claude had watched over Stacey, making sure no one else would come after her and try to harm her to get to him. It had taken him a month to be sure that the men he'd dealt with hadn't told their superiors about him or Stacey. It had taken him another month of arguing with himself that he needed to move on from her to be stuck in the place he still was. He lived a dangerous life, and he'd let his guard down too much, putting Stacey in danger. And yet he hadn't left her neighborhood yet. He hadn't even left the outside of her apartment yet.

It was torture to see her everyday during the week, leaving for work and coming back, and being unable to touch her or speak to her. If he wanted to cut her out of his life and move on, he was doing a piss-poor job of it, doing what he was doing.

He hated seeing her looking so sad, and knowing that he was the reason for it. Many times he'd see Claudia and Steve leaving the building, but Stacey was never with them. It seemed to be that she never left the apartment unless it was for work.

He wondered to himself if he was going to spend the rest of his life watching over her when the front door of the building opened and Steve held it open for Claudia. Stepping away from the wall, Claude looked up to see if Stacey was with them, but of course she wasn't.

"Has she acted like this in past breakups before?" Claude heard Steve say to Claudia.

"Yeah, but it's never lasted so long before." she answered with a worried frown.

Taking her hand in his as they walked down the steps, he replied, "She's... not looking too good."

"I know." Her face crumbling, she added, "I don't know what to do... she's so unhappy."

Steve nodded as they reached the bottom step and turned to walk right past Claude. "I know. But it's like, nothing we try helps."

"I hear her crying when she thinks I'm asleep." She rested her head on his shoulder and sighed glumly.

In response to that, Steve squeezed her hand and dropped his cheek against her head as they started to pass Claude. "I know Claude thought he was doing the right thing, but if he could see how hurt she is, he might change his tune."

"That asshole." Claudia muttered, pouting. "I don't care if it was justified; he broke my best friend's heart."

"Mmm hmm. It sure is... Broken to bits." Steve sighed out as they travelled out of earshot.

Tears stinging his eyes, Claude decided that enough was enough. He had a decision to make that was long overdue.

**************************

Stacey locked the door behind her and headed down the stairs, stuffing her keys into the pocket of her skirt. She knew Claudia and Steve, and everyone else for that matter, was worried about her, and she hated that she was doing that to them. But she'd never been so upset about breaking up with someone before. It hadn't even really been a breakup; they were married, after all, though not legally. So it was like a divorce with no warning whatsoever.

She headed outside and squinted as the afternoon sun reflected off buildings and cars. She shaded her eyes and contemplated going back upstairs for her sunglasses but finally decided she didn't care enough to and went on her way.

She had already planned where she was going, and though it'd be painful, she wanted to see the bench in Central Park where she and Claude went to when they'd want to be naughty and have sex in public while invisible. She liked to call it their 'love bench,' and whenever she had told Claude that she wanted to visit it, his eyes would light up and he'd practically pull her out the door.

As she walked, she wondered to herself if he was close by. She knew that if had left her to keep her safe, that he'd still be around, watching over her. She supposed he was like her guardian angel, in that way. Her friends were convinced that he had taken off, that he probably wasn't even the city anymore, but Stacey knew him better than they did.

She entered the park and followed the familiar path to their bench. She thought back to the many times they'd walk the path together, hand in hand. It felt so strange to be doing it alone now. When she saw the bench across the field, she was disappointed to see someone already sitting there. It was a middle-aged women reading a book, but she was only taking up half of the bench so Stacey walked over and sat down on the other side, giving the woman a tiny smile, which was returned.

They sat in silence as Stacey watched people playing sports, walking, or reading out in the sun. She was so absorbed in her thoughts that Stacey only noticed the woman pack up and leave when she passed right in front of her.

Now that she was alone, Stacey closed her eyes and allowed herself to imagine what things would be like if Claude were there with her. She was concentrating so hard, that when a finger brushed down her cheek, she thought for a moment that she was imagining it. But once she realized she was really feeling it, her eyes flew open and she saw Claude sitting right beside her.

Gasping aloud, she was frozen in shock for only a moment before she flung herself at him, one hand grabbing onto his coat while her other arm wrapped around his neck and her face pressed into his chest.

She felt a deep rumble in his chest as he chuckled. "I've missed you, too!" he exclaimed, his arms encircling her.

Naturally, Stacey had burst into tears, and she struggled to sniff them back. "How long have you been here?"

"Here in the park? A few minutes."

She smiled and pulled back just enough to get a good look at him, but there was no way she was letting go completely. Touching his face with one hand, the other still hanging on tightly to him, she said, "I never thought I'd see you again."

"I was close to you the whole time." he replied, still holding onto her as well.

"I knew you were. Everyone said you must have left, but I knew you were watching over me."

"How could I stay away?" he asked, nuzzling her cheek.

With a soft sob, she whispered, "You won't keep staying away, will you? All invisible?"

"No. I wouldn't appear like this just to leave again. That would be cruel. No, I'm back for always. For as long as you'd like." He kissed the corner of her mouth gently, though on the inside he could hardly contain himself, being so close to her again.

Stacey turned her head and kissed him hard, just to show him how much he was missed. Then she pulled back and looked at him seriously, her eyes briming with tears. "Forever."

He tightened his hold and kissed her back fiercely, and Stacey crawled into his lap, her hands shaking as she cupped his face. She pulled back from the kiss, completely breathless and her eyes pleading. "Please... invisible... now. I-I need you..."

With a nod, Claude slipped his hands under her shirt to rest against the skin of her back. "We are." he said, voice hoarse with unshed tears of his own. Without wasting a moment, Stacey fumbled to undo his fly and get her underwear off, her hands a flurry of movement.

Claude laughed, watching all this. "It's not a race, petal."

Her underwear safely stashed in her pocket, she straddled his lap again. "Two months!" she exclaimed, blinking away fresh tears.

His expression softening, Claude added, "And four days."

She giggled and nodded. "Yeah." Then she settled herself over his erection and they both inhaled sharply as she sunk down onto him.

"Mmph." she whimpered, leaning forward and kissing his forehead.

"Ohhhh, I've missed this." Claude practically growled. His voice made her shake and she started to rock in his lap.

"I've missed you!" she gasped out.

Breathing hard, he lifted his head up to look at her. "I've missed you too." He pressed a kiss to her neck and added, "I love you."

"Mmm hmmm..." she replied. "L-Love you tooooo..." She shuddered and made a soft noise and before he could get himself under control, he came with a groan.

She dropped her head down against his shoulder as her body slowly started to relax. Rubbing her back, Claude sighed. "I'm sorry, petal. That was awful of me. I'll make it up to--"

"Shh..." she broke in, nuzzling his jawline. "S'okay. I love you and I have you back now." She paused to let out a breath. "We'll have forever now..." She trailed off and snuggled close.

Claude reached for her chin and tilted her head up to look at him. "I'll make it up to you. I promise. As soon as I get you home."

She smiled and closed her eyes. "Home. Can we go home now?"

"Sure can." he replied, kissing her temple and readjusting their clothing before he scooped her up.

She sighed happily and clung tightly to him as he carried her out of the park.

**************************

Claude opened his eyes to see that it had grown dark. Well, as dark as it could be with the streetlights outside casting light into the room. After an entire afternoon and evening of lovemaking and snuggling, they had finally gotten up to have dinner, and then Claudia and Steve had returned to find him there with Stacey. After a stinging slap from Claudia and getting a speech about how she'd kill him if he ever hurt Stacey again, they had left to go to Steve's and give the apartment to the reunited couple for the night.

Now Claude really needed to use the toilet, but Stacey had her limbs wrapped around him in ways of which he thought only a contortionist capable. After some wriggling and unwrapping, he finally got her peeled off of him and went to the bathroom.

When he came back into the bedroom, he saw Stacey mumbling in distress in her sleep, tears leaking out the corners of her eyes.

With a grumble, he muttered, "I just needed to pee." before he climbed back into bed.

Sensing that he was beside her again, Stacey snuggled close to him, and sighed his name in her sleep, sounding relieved.

He melted at that and held her close, whispering, "I'll always come back to you." Then he pressed a kiss to her forehead and she cooed happily, mumbling something about choo choo trains. That made him start to chuckle deeply and she pouted in her sleep at the strange sound.

He'd missed seeing his Stacey's pout, so he gently kissed her mouth, waking her. Once she realized what was happening, she kissed him back and he pulled away slightly.

"Hey, naughty girl. Back to sleep."

"You're the one who woke me, naughty boy." she mumbled groggily, reaching out to pat his behind.

"Didn't mean to. You got all clingy when I needed to get up and use the toilet." He gave her a fake sulky look at the end.

"I didn't mean to either." she replied, matching his sulky look with her own.

"Did to."

She gasped, coming a bit more awake. "I did not!" she protested, making him laugh. She poked him for that, and he exclaimed, "Oy!"

Giggling, she gave him a sleepy, dreamy kiss.

"Mmmmmm..." he moaned, returning the kiss and deepening it by sliding his tongue past her lips.

After a few minutes of their tongues dancing around their mouths, she tugged him until she managed to get him to roll on top of her.

"Unnnh, what'm I doin' here?" he asked, his voice sluggish.

"Kissing your wife, silly."

"Nuh, on top of my wife."

"Mmm hmm. Since you're here... we should make some love."

"Mmmm. Love's nice." He rested his head down on the pillow beside her own.

"Mmm hmm. 'Specially with you."

"Uh huh."

She gently kissed his ear, but in response he let out a soft snore. She pouted heavily, but his snores only increased. She poked him and said, "Stop snoring."

Without waking, he rolled off her and onto his side, which stopped his snores. She sighed and cuddled up against him again, and once she was settled, his arm came up around her as he mumbled something, including her name.

She smiled and pressed a kiss to a scar on his chest, feeling loved. He let out a huff of air, but didn't wake. She was alright with that though; he'd make it up to her tomorrow.
