[For Serenity folk]

Kaylee woke far earlier that usual. It was still pitch dark out. decorative oriental fans fell from the wall her bunk was against and clobbered her awake. She couldn't fall back asleep however she tried, tossing and turning and apparently dislodging another of the oversized fans. Deciding to get up, she dressed quickly and left her bunk, heading to the galley to fetch coffee to wake her up, the splash of the kettle gave her a small scolding and after running it under the tap, she noticed no matter how tight she turned the taps, it continued to drip-trickle lightly. Likely the washer was lose or something. She fetched her tool kit and in trusting her ability in it was merely a case of tightening she didn't bother to shut off the mains. Of course she regretted this somewhat, in giving the stem a strong wrench to tighten it, the tap practically exploded, sending her scrambling half drenched to shut off the mains. Well, at least they could go to the compound for water.

Her mood was gradually souring now and in an effort to cheer herself a little, Kaylee, wet hair and all wandered over to the engine room, working on the engine was always something that would ease her temper, she'd hate to start the day when everyone got up all moody, it still wasn't even light out. Kaylee as always had a bit of a mental list when it came to working on the engine, the ship no longer flew, but there was still things in engineering that she needed to get done, power still worked on Serenity and some things still ran, still got worn, plus if she ever did get the ship flying again she wanted her girl to be in the best condition she could be. Though nothing, at all seemed to go right; after ducking under the engine to shift a gummed up part she managed to hit her head hard, giving herself a tiny cut, in tweaking the fastenings on a line she accidentally severed it and managed to get herself covered in splatters of oil. So now she was half drenched, cut, grease smudged and had an extensive oil stain. She slid out from under the engine.

Glancing briefly at the gauges that sat on the wall monitoring the vitals such as life support levels and so on, sat weirdly, she notice and tapping at the glass they didn't budge. Not that they exactly required monitoring the oxygen levels when they were sorta surrounded by it; but again never could be sure when she'd get it right and they'd be flying again, and trouble with anything related to the life support would only delay them from getting in the air longer! lifing the panel off the wall, Kaylee peered into the mess of wires, searching for what she wanted; of course the moment she pulled the board she needed to access in closer reach she didn't count on the sudden sparking and crackling, the mechanic giving a loud yelp and jumping back.

There was a loud power-up related 'clunk' as bright red emergency lights came on, and then began to flash.

A piercing siren, followed the pulsing of the red lights, and it blared persistently from every shipboard speaker with a disturbing and to the mechanic frustratingly loud 'EERN, EEERN, EEERN' a spoken warning echoing the vessel.

"Life support failure. Check oxygen levels at once" It paused briefly, before repeating in Mandarin "Gausaang haitung guzoeng. Gimcaa jeonghei gungjing." the voice sounded remarkably calm for such a serious a warning Kaylee thought.

The voice went on, repeating the words over and over as the alarm continuedloudly

"Oh come on now, there ain't nothin' wrong with the oxygen, levels. We got more than we're ever gonna use." Kaylee told the wall unit, it's wire 'innards' still hanging out. The sparking had charred something, and no matter how she tried to tweak it, the persistant alarm would not silence. In the end she clipped the wire, hoping to disable the entire thing. It did nothing, and she swore under her breath. She was going to have to shut off the sound or something, until she could fix what she'd done.

The engineering access panel was out just by the doorway, though she'd been untidy and left the proper tools in the cargo bay, and she tore in there to fetch them.

tiki plot, kaylee
