Eric on for Poseidon, Kim Ok-bin still in consideration

Looks like the news is finally confirmed: Eric is on for action drama Poseidon, which is set in the world of the maritime police and has already cast Kim Kang-woo as a lead. This news has been floating around for a few weeks, but only as unconfirmed rumor, as with a few other names like idol star U-Know Yunho. (Yunho’s casting is still undecided.)

But Eric, the Shinhwa rapper turned actor who just completed his military obligation, told the press as he was discharged on October 30 (pictured above) that he will be acting in Poseidon. He has been serving out his mandatory army duty since October of 2008, and had been fielding offers for a comeback project in the months leading up to his discharge.

He last acted in the ri-diiiiiiiii-cu-lous goof of a drama Strongest Chil Woo, which was absurd and entertaining. My favorite of his roles remains 2007′s intense Que Sera Sera; if you think he’s yet another idol-turned-actor who can’t act, you’ve gotta check that one out. Prior to that, he’d been working on an action drama, Wolf, but had to quit when he sustained an injury while filming a stunt; the drama production was discontinued and the injury would later lead to his being granted a desk job within the army.

Eric added that he’d like to show a masculine appeal similar to Jang Hyuk in Chuno (and, coincidentally, Jang Hyuk was another name who was rumored to be in contention for this series).

Meanwhile, Kim Ok-bin is still said to be considering the role; her rep stated this past week that nothing has been decided yet, but that the announcement would come soon. While she gained entree to the entertainment industry more for her looks than anything (she was one of the earliest examples of an uljjang who made the successful leap to an acting career, along with Gu Hye-sun and Nam Sang-mi), she has really kicked it up, acting- and career-wise, in recent years. In particular, she was praised for her role in Park Chan-wook’s vampire thriller Thirst, which won a jury prize at Cannes in 2009.

Poseidon is set for 20 episodes, and is aiming to broadcast in the first half of next year.

Eric, “I have to annoy the other members now that I’m discharged”

Singer/actor Eric, who was discharged from military service on 30 Oct, said at a press conference at the Sports Complex subway station, “I’m happy because I can annoy the other members who are still serving their military duties.” (SO SO TYPICAL OF HIM! LOL)

“2 years ago I was the first among the members to enlist, and they were having so much fun annoying me. Now that I’m the first to complete my military service, I can annoy them now and I’m really happy.”

“Especially Andy who has the most work, and Minwoo who has the longest time left, I must make fun of them as much as possible. We’ve been in touch with one another all this time during my service, so I don’t really think we need to meet up specially.”

“I’m grateful to all the fans who have been consistently supporting me since I enlisted 2 years ago, and I will work even harder in future.”

More than 400 fans from Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Canada and other countries around the world were present to welcome Eric back from military service.

Eric enlisted in October 2008 and was subsequently assigned to Seoul Metro to serve as a public service officer, taking care of CCTV monitoring, crowd control and other duties.

He has also decided on the Korean coast guard drama “Poseidon” as his comeback project, and will play the role of “Seon Woo” in the drama. He will start filming early next month, and also has plans to make his comeback to the music scene.

Eric makes his return to acting with a charismatic and masculine role in “Poseidon”

Singer/actor Eric, freshly discharged from his duties as a public service officer with Seoul Metro, has announced his comeback drama project.

“I will be participating in the drama ‘Poseidon’, and will be starting filming very soon.”
Eric said that the role he really wanted to play was that of Jang Hyuk’s role in Chuno. He said, “Although this is not a sageuk (historical drama), but I will bring out the masculine nature of the role in ‘Poseidon’ just like Jang Hyuk’s character in ‘Chuno’.”

“Poseidon” is a drama that revolves around the lives of members of the Korean Coast Guard.

Eric: John Park and Heo Gak are juniors who have left deep impressions on me

Shinhwa leader Eric said that John Park and Heo Gak from Mnet’s Superstar K2 are the juniors who have left deep impressions on him.

Making his entrance to the press conference held on 30 Oct at Sports Complex subway station, Eric was dressed smartly in a beanie, a leather jacket and denim jeans, and was welcomed by more than 400 fans from around the world who held up banners that said “Oppa is back”.

When asked about which juniors have left deep impressions on him, Eric replied “Of course John Park and Heo Gak who are hot topics of discussion these days.”

“They already are very skilled singers to being with, but I really liked that despite the fact that they were rivals, they walked hand-in-hand until the end, which is very heartwarming.”

In a video message to them, Eric said, “I’m deeply impressed. Although you may find the going tough as you work hard in your activities in future, I will support you always.”

When asked about girl groups, Eric said that he liked them all, but added wittily that “Since our company has our own girl group, I don’t really look at the others.”

The return of the cool guy - Eric holds impromptu autograph session for fans

Shinhwa leader Eric displayed his “cool guy” style at his army discharge press conference on 30 Oct at Sports Complex subway station, as he held an impromptu autograph session for more than 400 fans from all over the world who came to welcome him back.

The autograph session was suggested by Eric on the spot, and was not planned in advance. Eric hoped to show his appreciation for the fans who have supported and waited for him for the past 2 years, and braved the cold weather to welcome him back.

His spontaneous announcement sent fans into a frenzy, but the session resumed and proceeded smoothly after the intervention of staff members.

Shinhwa leader and actor Eric (real name Mun Jung Hyuk) sent his fans into fits of laughter with his witty comments at his army discharge press conference held on 30 Oct at the Sports Complex subway station.

Dressed casually in a leather jacket and denim jeans, Eric was interviewed for KBS 2TV’s Entertainment Relay. When asked if he often contacts the Shinhwa members, he replied, “We meet up quite often when I knock off from work. They’re all envious that I’ve completed my service.”

“2 years ago I was the first to enlist so they were making fun of me a lot. Now I can do it back to them, especially to Minwoo who has the longest time to go, and Andy who has the hardest duties.”
