Durian is a fruit famous for its smell and is grown in tropical countries. It is rather small, and has wide, numerous thorns all over its body and yes, it does smell. Just a pungent smell, though I heard some describe it worse. But the smell definitely is unforgettable. So about an hour ago, my mother happened to give in and finally let me have a taste of this fruit. My mother who has, for years, refused to let me taste the naural fruit and instead let me have the durian candies and other sweets concocted from the flesh of the fruit. They're tasty, that I assure you.
Naturally, when I got the fruit which was wrapped in paper to avoid it puncturing the fragile plastic, I had no qualms on opening it (I had to be careful, the thorns were biting into my skin though it wasn't so bad) even with the smell washing over me. I didn't mind it, the smell was the same as its counterpart in candies. I opened it and took one of the seed still wrapped in the off white colored flesh and popped it into my mouth.
Just kidding. I didn't pop it straight into my mouth. First, I held the seed in my hand wondering at its fleshy texture that easily rubs off when handled roughly. Then I placed just a bit of it into my mouth and I retched. It didn't taste so nice. :( I'd rather smell it than eat it.
I can't even begin describing the taste. I simply found it horrible that I brushed my mouth three times, drank milk, and ate oat meal just to get rid of he aftertaste. And I tell you, it lingers. It really does. That's the last time I'll be eating the fruit.
I'd rather have the candies, thank you.
