Soon after the tragedy at Columbine High School, I received a forwarded email from a friend that contained a pastor’s message. He quoted the lyrics above and discussed bullying and its consequences. That was many computers ago and I no longer have that message saved, but it has always stuck with me.
I’m a huge fan of Law and Order, but there are some episodes I just can’t stand to watch: a lone gunman killing student nurses meeting in a park, a boy shooting a gun in his school, two teens modeled after the Columbine killers shooting up a shopping mall…and the final episode of the Mothership involving a disgruntled teacher threatening to blow up his high school. As a parent, I worry enough about my child…am I a good enough mother? Is she happy? What will her future be like? I try not to give in to the fears that are prevalent among parents today thanks to death warnings on baby equipment, America’s Most Wanted, and Stranger Danger programs, so I want my entertainment to be escapist. What I don’t need is the suggestion that every loner student is waiting to commit mass murder at school, not to mention disgruntled teachers!
My sister-in-law is a fan of reality TV like Dancing with the Stars, The Bachelor, and The Amazing Race. I really dislike those types of shows, but I don’t make fun of her for liking them. She often teases me about my love of crime dramas and asks who wants to watch death and dismemberment?
Some days, when the subject matter is based on a Columbine-like massacre, I agree with her.
