Kindle

My Kindle arrived last night. I got the basic Kindle with the "special offers" and so far I'm not finding them intrusive at all. I like the page buttons on the side. They are easy and intuitive. It's lighter than I thought it would be. Learning from my son's experience, I bought a cover at the same time. The power button is a little harder to use ( Read more... )

A practical example:

1. Go to http://www.webscription.net/p-622-the-mountains-of-mourning.aspx
2. Click on the "Mobi/Palm/Kindle" link. It'll download a file named "The_Mountains_of_Mourning.mobi" to your downloads folder.
3. Using the supplied USB cable, connect the Kindle to your computer. The Kindle screen should turn mostly white with a warning that your kindle is in USB drive mode and is not charging. If you want, it'll say, to charge your kindle, "eject" the drive. Contemporaneously, you should get an icon of a new disk on your desktop, labeled something like "Hazelsdaughter's Kindle".
4. Double-click on the new disk icon to open it. You should see a couple of folders, including one labeled "Documents".
5. Double-click on the "Documents" folder. There will be a bunch of files in it with names which roughly correspond to items already on your Kindle (I usually see several related files per title).
6. Copy or move the .mobi file from your Downloads folder to the Kindle Documents folder.
7. Close the Kindle folder window.
8. Right-click on the Kindle drive icon, and select "Eject disk". The icon should disappear, a message about safely removing the disk may appear, and the Kindle should switch to either the home page or to the "screensaver" indicating it's off.
9. If it's off, turn it on. It's OK if it's still connected to the computer.
10. On your home screen should be "The Mountains of Mourning" preceeded by a little superscripted "New".

If this works (and I think it should, although I'm describing a lot of it blind, as my Kindle is at home and I'm not), I'm sure you are smart enough to generalize.

After I do some research, we can talk about using tools to convert from epub and other e-book formats to mobi so it'll work on the Kindle. I haven't tried that much yet myself.
