Gold, Gold, Gold for Australia!

The Scotsman was a magnificent place to be last night. Packed to the rafters with die-hard instant soccer fans (just add alcohol!) who were damned if they'd let trifles like complete ignorance of the rules of the game stop their full-throated support for the Aussies, it was impossible to not be swept along in a tide of rapture when the winning goals thundered home.

Gasping emotional impact, broken hearts one minutes and tears of joy the next - the beautiful game deserves its epithet. And the hundreds of people in Mt Lawley who thrilled to the game will be joined by a TV audience that apparently numbered 29 billion in 2002 and will be bigger this year.

Which is why I just have to ask: With all this magic and all these fans - could no-one have come up with a World Cup trophy that didn't look like a 24 karat blob of vomit?
