Well Tonight I went to see "The Libertine" starring Johnny Depp, and as promised here are my thoughts on the film. :)
First let me set the scene...
My friend Jacqueline S and I had "Gallery seats" which meant we were separate from the normal cheap seats cinema going plebs :D
We got to sit in the big comfy sofas with a glass of wine and mint flavoured matchmakers (chocolate sticks). Very decadent.
So, the film was excellent. Superbly acted, especially by Depp.... but all the actors were great, with special mention for Samantha Morton who was wonderful as Elizabeth Barry, The Earl of Rochester's mistress.
There were only very brief minimal scenes with nudity, but the language was very crude in places with no swear word considered taboo. This doesn't bother me but some people may take offence.
It actually made very uncomfortable viewing at times, but equally I couldn't take my eyes off it. It was that enthralling.
I observed some people leaving midway through... maybe they were offended by it... a few were certainly Depp fangirls who were expecting something quite different :D Their loss.
At the end of the film when the credits rolled, I found I was almost teary... not due to sadness but because I had found it so brilliantly acted that I was moved by it.
It's filmed very simply, and the colour palette deliberately has a washed out feel, but it captures the atmosphere of 17th Century London really well. (Not that I was ever there :D ).
I heartily recommend this film as long as you aren't too bothered by crude dialogue. :) It's worth seeing for Depp's performance alone.
It's also very funny in places :D
