the origins of SAD (Singles Appreciation Day)

Feb 14, 2006 10:24

yes this is stolen from kelly, as you can see in my last post, but as we all appreciate our single friends i thought i'd look into what started this "holiday."

it would seem that st valentine was a priest in mid-3rd century AD who was beaten and beheaded on Feburary 14, 269, for helping Christians in prison. He converted his jailor while in prison by restoring the sight of the man's daughter.

How does this tie into our current valentines day, you ask?

Well there seems to be an ancient belief that birds first mate in the middle of February, and thus "every bird chooses his mate" and so forth, this is often referenced to in a lot of freakin old poetry. What is the middle of February? The Feast of St. Valentine. Eventually these holidays just merged and became one.

However, St. Valentine is actually the patron saint of beekeepers, fainting, greeting card manufacturers, plauges, and fainting. He is also the patron saint of pretty much anything related to romantic relationships. Except for break-ups.
