The California deserts dust kicked up by rusty semi trucks passing
plotting the quickest routs home
I'm ignoring the storm of insects shadows at my feet
I'm ignoring parallel realities (roads)
Only 5 hours from intersection,
only 5 hours from you, but
I won't cross these lines (state or otherwise)
The talk here is cheap, but I can't even afford that
It's conversation anxiety
Getting caught in this web
a moment
a thought at a crossroads (literally or metaphorically)
my mind drags on in rapid succession
like this last cigarette and free cup of coffee I'm gripping in one hand
like the pen pouring across this page in the other.
remembering
heartbeats that skipped off flights of butterflies by midnight canvas light
remembering
the fireflies we kept in mason jars (computer screens)
preemptive sparks with nothing to ignite
remembering
when we used to breath so elegant these softly spoken fermented dreams
I've been around now
I've seen how small the world gets
I've witnessed the futility of words
I've watched the perspectives we shared expand and explode
until the only things left that I can see
are the feeble attempts (at love or at life)
and I laugh, remembering these things

I've seen it
I've witnessed it
I've watched it all
and I know
that these words hold no recourse
and by now you should know that that's not the point
It's just sometimes
even under the pale orange glow and plumes of black exhaust
in the sweltering desert's dust and debris
by over used outhouses, gum embedded sidewalks,
the spit, and the ash of burnt out lives
That I still see the stars, I still taste the wine
and I still remember the lessons that we learned
in the eternal fire of our midnight banter
