I have never been more proud of Americans than last night. You can hope and pray for change, but to see it actually happen... wow. I'm not usually one to even care about politics. Usually I try to avoid it. But I did my civic duty and voted. I even researched candidates so that I could make an educated decision. I was very proud of myself and very proud of the enormous support of our president-elect Obama.
I am also really proud of the way McCain handled himself and his boo-ing audience with his speech after he lost the election. I thought it was very mature of him to encourage everyone to work with Obama, even if they don't agree with everything he does. I thought his speech was gracious, respectful, and heartfelt. I was really surprised.
I can't wait for the day I get to tell my kids and grandkids about the moment America changed it's history. We have our first multi-racial minority as president. We voted someone into office that will hopefully inspire hope and good changes for us. Obama's speech last night truly moved both me and Aaron to tears. I love the idea of not only rebuilding the United States to being actually united but to also unite all the countries. His speech was so full of hope and this gives me faith in him that he will be a good, if not great, leader for the next four years, and hopefully after that if he does well.
I know Obama will meet many many challenges in office-- not only from his peers, but from the public, because still some people are ignorant and racist and refuse to change. He has a LOT to clean up after the mess Bush made, and he will meet a lot of resistance as well. I am excited to see the changes, to do my part now to help this country, and to see us be patriotic in a sense that we do not sound like a sappy country song... I just want to be proud of where I live instead of grumbling to myself that everything here sucks. I feel a change in the wind and a change about to happen within all of us.
And to quote Obama: YES WE CAN.
