It occurred to me today that I don't understand the American public and why they prefer comedians who are less funny. The more popular Daily Show correspondents are Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell. I don't understand this. These guys are not that funny. They've definitely got nothing on Weymouth native Rob Cordry, whose interview segments show an understanding of the importance of self-deprecation in comedy, especially when dealing with satire. He combines the insults towards the subject (which the two S.C.s seem to entirely rely on) with insults towards himself, highlighting the absurdity of the entire situation. While I cannot say that this attitude towards comedy is specific to Massachusetts (Steve Carell is from Concord,) it definitely can be seen in another country's comedic background. That country is Canada, the homeland of my other favorite correspondent Samantha Bee. After all, she hails from the land that produced the inspiration for Comedy Central's The Daily Show, the Newfie news show This Hour Has 22 Minutes.
