What Goes On

A lot of people (and by a lot of people, I mean my circle of friends from WPHS who keep xangas, who are the only people who read this thing) have been musing lately about the nature of xangas: should they be serious or stupid? I like to keep mine stupid, because I'm a stupid sort of person, and because I really keep it just to keep the folks back ( Read more... )

I agree that the punishment doesn't fit the crime. The girls probably would have benefitted from offended students opening a dialogue with them. University reaction seems pretty stupid.
Back at Dub P, however, I think black students wouldn't have reacted well to a bunch of idiot white kids throwing a thug party. In this case, it is not the salad bowl of culture that we knew at high school, but what seems to be a clear theft and bastardization of culture by some white kids (see Malibu's Most Wanted). We knew what it was like to grow up surrounded by strong elements of rap culture. so we would not have thrown that party. It is unlikely that the hosts had any idea. Rap culture is prevalent everywhere, but black people don't live everywhere, so a lot of white kids grow up with no perspective (like those Scarsdale bitches we all know).
I guess that's essentially my stand.

Miss you,
Harry

Ok I hadn't heard anything about that party, perhaps due to the fact that I never get invited to parties anyway, but hearing what happened now really makes me angry ( ... )

whether these girls knew what theyre doing was offensive or not (in like you said, rap and urban culture is so incredibly mainstreamed in the us that it doesnt pertain to black people anymore, but then again,we do ome from our racially and culturally diverse dubp) the punishment is far beyond what they deserve and it seems like the school is only taking these past actions to please the OSB and not give the school a rep. for not caring, when in fact its the OSB that shouldve handled things a little differently
