Had our last concert of the school year on Friday. Highlights: no one died. Yay!
The most amazing and arbitrary things can be seen/heard in a classroom:
Scene - Myself, Marcus (teaching partner) and about 65 band kids tuning up in the music room before the next in a series of concerts.
Marcus - "Cate, there is a nosebleed in the side room."
Me - "Oh? And you are telling me this because?"
Marcus - "Well, um, you are a MOM."
Me - "Ah, so you want me to deal with it, huh?"
Marcus - "I thought you would be really better at it."
Did you know that "talking" and "asking" are NOT the same thing?
Scene - Me, the audience and band students waiting to perform who are supposed to be quiet and respectful while another performance is going on.
Me - "Why are you talking? You are supposed to be quiet."
Student - "I wasn't talking. I was asking (the other student)a question."
Me - "And asking is not talking?"
Student - "No. Asking is not talking."
Me - "So what was the question?"
Student - "I was asking if he saw Idol last night and what he thought."
Me - "Where you using your mouth to do the asking?"
Student - "yeah."
Me - "Then you were Tasking, a cross between Talking and Asking, which is still talking."
Student - "I'm in trouble, huh?"
Tonight is the Big School Board Meeting that has had pre-meeting news coverage all day. Several of my students will be giving speeches before the School Board. The District is planning on putting through even more cuts which is infuriating the parents. There should be a very heavy police presence there also. I purposely stayed away from the meeting so it doesn't look like I put my students up to addressing the meeting. This is going to get a lot uglier before it gets fixed.
