Comics get away with things that "serious" novels can't. For instance, I can't imagine Warren Ellis sitting down and writing a full-length novel. By the time he was done, it'd be so full of anger and nastiness that nobody would ever publish it. But in a comic it's easier to mix that in with just the right touch of sweetness, and it's acceptable.
