The Absurdity of My Family

Jun 27, 2006 18:23

Received a rare e-mail from my uncle Mike today. Uncle Mike is the uncle; the one with 11 kids. Him and his family live in upstate New York, near Colgate College, where they are heralded in their community for being "good Catholics," and for homeschooling all of their children. Also, their definition of a good Catholic is somewhere around evangelical. Anyways, they're crazy.

But, we never receive an e-mail from them, unless something monumental has happened to their family. Usually this happens to be another pregnancy. They want 12 children, to match the 12 disciples (each child even has a biblical name...I'm waiting for Moses to pop out). However, today it was something different.

It seems that their eldest child, Stephen, has graduated from high school, and is starting college in the fall! Firstly, I'm tickled pink that he's "graduated" from "high school" on June 23, 2006. This conjures up images in my mind of him walking the aisle in their living room to receive his diploma.

Secondly, my cousin is 15. Fifteen. What? He can't vote! He can't drive! He's 5' 6"! He's not even a genius! But, by gum! He's going to college! It really should be noted, that because he's been homeschooled his entire life, he really has no social skills. His friends are his siblings, and a few children from their church. Going to college? What? The poor kid is going to be eaten alive.
