Guns n' Roses 2011 (plus Guns n' Roses 1992)

In 1992, I went to a Guns n' Roses concert at the San Diego Sports Arena. It was my first real concert, ever. I had to beg my parents to let me go. To this day, I'm not even sure how I pulled that one off.

I went with my friend Justin and his pot-smoking, bad-influence friend. Our fourth was Justin's bad influence friend's worse influence friend. We got to the parking lot and the three of them started drinking beers. "No thanks, I'm here for the show."

"We" got caught by the police, and Justin's bad influence friend's worse influence friend was taken to the police station to detox. Since I clearly wasn't drinking and the other two lucked out, we still got to go to the show.

Soundgarden was the opening act, and they sounded great. At least I think they did. The show was so loud that it felt like something was scratching at my eardrums. I thought that was how all concerts were supposed to be. To this day, that was by far the loudest show I've ever been to.

Guns didn't go on for hours after that, a scenario that they eventually became famous for. When they did go on, they played until about 4am. My dad called in a missing persons report for me, but when the police heard I had gone to Guns n' Roses, they assured my dad that it was just a really late show.

A few weeks ago, I found out Guns n' Roses tickets were going on sale for a new tour. Guns n' Roses is now Axl Rose and a group of hired musicians, but I figured it was worth the $25 per ticket and it would be great people watching. It was a ton of fun!

Matt and I had so much fun. The people watching, the hit songs, the pyrotechnics! Axl's voice sounded good and the band was really energetic. You could tell they were having a good time themselves. The show ended at 2am this time, and on the way out we ran in to porn star Ron Jeremy.

This will be a favorite Christmas-time memory for years.
