My parents were not demonstrative.

Not their fault, in all actuality, just a product of their time. But its one of those "mistakes" I am bound and determine to correct this time around.

I was putting Steven to bed tonight and, talking quietly in the dark (as is our routine), and he said something to make me laugh.

"Babe," I said, "If I had a choice, I would freeze you at this age forever."

"Why?" he asked.

"Because you're young enough to still need me and old enough to be your own person. Because you make me laugh and you make your DADDY laugh, which is a feat in and of itself."

"On the other hand, a little more than a year from now, when you're eleven, or even when you're fourteen - I'll probably still be saying the same thing.... so I don't think I'll stop you from growing up."

"Okay mama, I love you."

"I love you too baby, now get some sleep. Sweet dreams."

tell me a story, steven, life lessons
