Sitting in church on Sunday I was struck with a pretty horrible thought. This thought came to me after listening to Ashley's father, Rick, give testimony. He said,"I've been truly blessed here on earth. If heaven is even a little better than this, well I want to be the first one in line ( Read more... )

A compelling thought, brosef.

But I ask this, if we were in Hell, how could the joy we feel on a daily basis be possible?

How could kissing feel so good? Or Newcastle Brown Ale taste so sweet? How could a G chord followed by a C chord followed by an A minor chord followed by D chord sound so triumphant?

These things are a gift from G-d. And though surly this world is Lost, hope still exists, right? There's no hope in hell.

This is so homoerotic. It reminds of a play...something involving HOBOerotica....

Jason, I would ask that you (and all your fellow Christian exemplars of peace, love, and understanding) not give up on this "Lost" world, as some of us are crazy enough to belive that it's all we've got and all we will ever get.

I never ever said I was giving up.

"And though surly this world is Lost..."

If proclaiming this world as "surely lost" isn't giving up, I don't know what is.

First off, I didn't claim it was surely lost...I claimed it was "surly Lost", which is a type-o, therefore, null and void in this argument.

I guess what I meant is, this world, and by that, our "physical existence" is surely lost, and by that I mean, "will pass away."

And I have hope for something "beyond" this world.

But even if there is nothing beyond this world, I would be hesitant to call this world hell. There's too much joy, life and complexity for this all to be punishment. Even if there is no heaven, I guess what I'm saying it, there are tastes of what I think "heaven" will be like here on earth.

So if this is all we have, there's still a lot of goodness to be had.

Yeah, duh Mike. I go (went) to a community college and I knew that's what he meant.

I never said there wasn't goodness here. I believe that all the goodness in the universe rests here. I just don't want people (religious folks) to think of this world as just a stop-gap, like some kind of hotel room that they can trash 'cos they'll soon move on to bigger and better things. Not that you do this, but I'm afraid that's where you're line of thinking might lead.

I think you're entirely right.

Personally, I think when we get to heaven G-d isn't going to ask, "How did I make the world?"

He's going to ask, "What did you do with my creation?"
