This morning as I was enjoying my morning news while reading the Province, I gasped in pure disbelief. Apparently, Sam Sullivan, Vancouver's Mayor, believes having camera's positioned throughout the city in, what has been known as "criminal area's" will help deter criminals from well criminalizing as well as help identify any person involved in crime. In case anyone is not aware, the UK has already instituted numerous camera's throughout the cities and have found the only thing camera's do is offer criminals fifteen seconds of fame.
In my opinion, camera's will not stop acts of violence. Harsher penalties, ever lasting convictions and perhaps extensive rehabilitation laws in conjunction with harm prevention and education might have a longer lasting impact and actually bring about a change in the levels of crime - crime that continues to escalate.
I am all for trying to make this city safer but I do not wish for my privacy to be affected because criminals are exceeding our justice system. I think Canada needs to look at our justice system and return power back to our police force, ensuring they have control to keep our streets safe. Do not misunderstand me, I do not want a "police run state" but I want criminals to be fearful not citizens.
I think we all need to reevaluate what is happening. This is the time to make a change.
