canon history:

Canon doesn't go into Eugene's history much before the movie, really. The most that we know is that he's an orphan, raised in an orphanage, where he first came across a book detailing the adventures of swashbuckler Flynnagin Rider, who's name inspires the name he takes after leaving (as he's embarrassed by his actual name), Flynn Rider, as he embarks on a life of thievery in order to accomplish his life's dream: seeking a life of money and freedom far far away (he dreams big: he wants his own island too).

He stumbles upon Rapunzel quite by accident, as he finds her tower while on the run from the palace guards (more like the captain of the guard's horse, Maximus) after stealing the crown of the kingdom's lost princess and the Stabbington Brothers, who had doubled crossed him and tried to take the crown as their own. He climbs into the tower hoping to use it as a hiding place until the heat has died down, only to be met with a frying pan to the face.

When he wakes up, he finds himself tied to a chair by blond hair and face to face with the woman who welds it, Rapunzel. She had taken the crown from him and hid it, and uses it's location as a way to bargain with him: he escorts her to the town to see the lights that happen every year on her birthday and return her home and she'll give the crown back.

Of course, he tries to dissuade this notion as he escorts her, first trying to convince her to call the whole thing off because this will 'crush her mother's soul' and again by taking her to a pub, the "Snuggly Duckling" hoping that the ruffians would convince Rapunzel to return to the tower. Of course, the pub thugs recognize him as Flynn and being to fight over who will turn him in for the reward, when Rapunzel distracts them with a song about dreams.

The Palace guards arrive soon after, and the Thugs manage to sneak Flynn and Rapunzel out through a secret passage way. For a little while, it seems as if the ploy had worked, until Maximus sniffs out the thief's scent and points the guards in the direction of the trap door and the tunnel, and thus, they give chase.

While in the tunnel, the two get to talking and Rapunzel shares a bit about herself, but Flynn declines to do the same for himself. However, their conversation is cut short by the arrival of the guards chasing them, and they flee, only to end up at the end of the tunnel, atop a cliff overlooking a canyon and damned river and cornered by the palace guards, Maximus and the Stabbington Brothers. They manage to escape, but end up being trapped in a cave filling with water. With no way out and time running short, Rapunzel makes her hair glow, which in turn, allows Flynn to see a way out.

Managing to get out of that predicament with teamwork, Rapunzel manages to surprise Flynn again by showing him her healing ability as well, by healing the wound that he had received on his hand while trying to get them out of the cave. Although thoroughly freaked out, he does get more of Rapunzel's back story, such as the true nature of her powers and the fact that she'll lose them if her hair is cut. In turn, Flynn confesses some things of his own, such as how he ended up a thief and the fact that his name is not, in fact, Flynn Rider, but Eugene Fitzherbert and that he hates the name. He also asks Rapunzel not to tell anyone, because his reputation as Flynn Rider is really all he has, as fake as it may be.

The next day, while traveling, they meet back up with Maximus. Rapunzel convinces the both of them to call a truce for the day, as it's her birthday after all and it would really really important to her if she got to see the lights (and she can't do that if Eugene gets arrested, now can she~? Oh, you're such a good horse, yes you are). Begrudgingly, the boys agree and Rapunzel gets to enjoy her day in the town, dancing, getting her done up so it's not crazy dragging and just in general having fun. That night, Rapunzel and Eugene are out on the lake, letting their own lanterns go when they realize their feelings for each other and are about to kiss.

Before they do, however, Eugene is distracted by the Stabbington Brothers. He brings them back to shore, assures Rapunzel he'll be right back and goes to investigate. Of course, this is a trap and Eugene is knocked out, tied to a boat, which is then set adrift... right to the palace guards who arrest him.

The next morning, as he's being lead to the gallows to be hanged, he discovers the Stabbington Brothers (who had been arrested too), who tell him Mother Gothel was behind it, and is then rescued by the Pub crew and Maximus. Eugene rushes to the tower (riding Maximus) to save Rapunzel, only to find Rapunzel tied and gagged as he climbs into the window... and then is stabbed from behind by Gothel. As he lays dying, Rapunzel convinces Gothel to allow her to save Eugene because if she does, she'll go with the woman willingly and stop fighting. Gothel agrees and frees Rapunzel, chaining up Eugene to keep him from following them, but before Rapunzel can heal Eugene, he reaches up with the last of his strength and cuts Rapunzel's hair, taking away her power and Gothel's hold over her, at the same time pretty much giving himself a death sentence.

Before he dies, he manages to tell Rapunzel that she had become his new dream and she tells him he was her's.... and that's the last thing he remembers before waking up in a place that's decidedly NOT the tower.

personality:

There are two sections to Eugene's personality: there's Flynn, the thief and then there's Eugene, the real person behind the name.

Flynn came into being because Eugene was a lonely young man who yearned for adventure, a better existence. He wanted away from his his past life, his past name, his past in general, and Flynn Rider was his way of distancing himself from it, pretending it didn't exist and starting over.

He's a bit of a brat, he's a thief of course, and a little bit of a jerk as well. After all, even after agreeing to escort Rapunzel to the town so that she can could see the floating lights, he was still scheming his way out of the deal, first attempting to guilt trip her back into the tower and then showing her that her mother was supposedly right. He's vain about his looks, he consistently points out how utterly wrong those wanted posters have his nose after all. Flynn is also greedy, he steals so that he can have money and hopefully that island he keeps insisting that he wants.

Flynn is also a smooth talker and a romantic, trying to talk Rapunzel into letting him go with a few good lines and some smoldering eyes. Apparently, however, the girl is smolder proof, because she just stares at him blankly and makes the deal with him.

Eugene, however, would probably be better described as a lost child, one who adapted a bigger then life persona in order to forget his humble beginnings as an orphan living in an orphanage and who saw the closest thing to swashbuckling he could find, thieving, as a way to get the life of adventure and money that he wanted. And while Eugene still is a talker and a flirt, he's staring to realize, thanks to Rapunzel, that his fake reputation isn't all that it's cracked up to be. After all, here's a girl that's lived her entire life in a tower and experiencing the outside world for the first time, and she's living it, enjoying it, closer to her dream then she's ever been before and he's helping her do it. He's starting to realize that living the lie really isn't want he wants out of life.

To this end, he slowly begins to open up to her, sharing things and telling her things that he's never told anyone before. Whether he realizes it or not, Rapunzel is slowly changing him, showing him the man that he is under the disguise of Flynn Rider. His dream slowly begins to change as well: he goes from wanting that island and money, to his dream being her.

This is what leads himself to make the ultimate sacrifice for her, knowing what she'd be giving up to save him. He knows by cutting his hair, he'd giving himself the death sentence, but he does it anyway, because he wants Rapunzel to be free, free of the tower, free of Gothel who wishes just to use the girl to suit her own needs, free to be herself, which is something that he's started to realize she'd allowed him to be. Because that's what important in the end and that's what Rapunzel has shown him: that he can happy being Eugene Fitzherbert and not Flynn Rider.g girl, to the point where he willingly gives up his life in order to free Rapunzel from Gothel.

why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting?
Flynn/Eugene is all about living a life of adventure and daring which Anatole could provide in spades. Plus, he would have the chance to hone his thieving skills... without Rapunzel knowing, of course.

Writing Samples

Network Post Sample:

[The Forge is on. How or why, it's not exactly known, but apparently it wants those watching to see something. Like the brown haired young man looking around in confusion.]

Okay. That hurt. Like, really really hurt. And I can't believe--

[Pause. Because this isn't the last thing he remembers.]

Blondie?

[Wait, should he even be calling her that anymore? She wasn't blond anyone, since he had cut her hair so she wouldn't be forced to go with the witch.]

[Speaking of which...]

[Suddenly starts feeling around his torso, especially at his back. He looks even more confused the longer he keeps it up, before dropping his hands.]

RAPUNZEL?!

Third Person Sample:

The city was bustling, loud with noise and the voices of people as they talked and bartered with each other.

He moved quickly between the people on the street, dodging and twisting his way through the crowd as he made his way towards his destination. He wasn't exactly sure where that was, but he figured that he'd get there eventually. After all, if what he heard and saw was true, Rapunzel wouldn't be hard to find. How does one miss seventy feet of hair?

Part of his mind glanced at the people in passing, gauging how easy it would have been to pick a pocket here or to swipe and apple from that booth there. He even found himself glancing at the buildings every so often, eyes narrowed as he took in their appearances and entrance and exit routes.

Eugene shook his head, dislodging those thoughts. There were other pressing matters that he had to take care of first, mainly finding Rapunzel and figuring how just where they were and how to get back. Oh, and how in the world was he alive, how the heck Rapunzel still had all her hair (and why the heck was it still blonde?! Last he remembered, it was short and brunette) and what the heck was this thing that he was carrying?

He knew one thing however, he shouldn't be alive at the moment. He very distinctly remembered the pain of being stabbed in the back and the very real realization that he was dying, and that by freeing Rapunzel from that woman who called herself her mother, by cutting her hair, he was ultimately giving himself the death sentence that the Captain of the Guard wasn't going to be able to give him.

He didn't regret it, however, and he knew that he would do it again and again if it meant meeting Rapunzel and helping her archive her dream of seeing the floating lanterns in person.

She had been the one that had given him his new dream, after all.

Anything else? I know I switched between Eugene and Flynn an awful lot. I tried to use Flynn when referring to that time after his childhood and before he starts opening up to Rapunzel because that's how he's known. After opening up to Rapunzel, though, I figured Eugene was better since he had owned up that that was his name.
